Bangor Stabbing
(Bangor) – One man suffered stab wound, another a broken arm, and ambulances also took a 3rd man to the hospital after a waterfront fight in Bangor during the weekend. Sergeant Wade Betters of the police department reports to Star 97.7 the fight broke out Friday night at the end of Dutton Street near the Penobscot River. They’re not releasing the men’s identities yet. No one’s been arrested.
Orneville Fatal
(Orneville) – One person is dead after an accident last evening in Orneville. The Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department had not released a name early this morning. WABI-TV reports the accident involved a vehicle that went off Lyford Road and struck trees around 7-o’clock last evening. The Sheriff’s Department is reconstructing the crash.
Thorndike Fire
(Thorndike) – Little is left of a vacant home in Thorndike after fire ripped through it during the weekend. The call to the Palmer Road came in around 5-o’clock Saturday afternoon. No injuries are reported, and the local fire department has asked the fire marshal’s office to help search for a cause. WVII-TV reports more than 5-dozen firefighters from three counties responded to the scene.
Safe Recovery Housing
(Ellsworth) Despite the recent housing boom in Ellsworth, Healthy Acadia says the city still needs safe housing for people trying to overcome substance misuse. Spokeswoman Denise Black says local folks must leave the area because Ellsworth doesn’t have any safe recovery housing, but Healthy Acadia hopes to change that. A presentation and discussion about safe recovery housing is planned this evening from 5 ‘til 7 at the Moore Community Center in Ellsworth.
Friendly Caller Development
(Sullivan) The town of Sullivan wants to hear residents’ ideas for developing a Friendly Caller Program. Age-Friendly Sullivan coordinator Candy Eaton tells Star 97-7 the public’s input is requested during an upcoming meeting. The meeting is July 30th at 5:30 PM at the Sullivan-Sorrento Rec Center on Route 1. Eaton says the Friendly Caller Program may be more like a “phone tree” as Sullivan does not have its own police department. The town hopes to launch the program beginning in October.
Drug Plea
(Hermon) A Hermon woman admitted to selling heroin, fentanyl and crack throughout Penobscot County. 29-year-old Harli Wells faces up to 20-years in prison and a one-million-dollar fine when she’s sentenced. She pled guilty Friday to conspiring with others to acquire drugs from Connecticut and sell them to local customers between January 2016 and February 2017.
Main St Petition
(Mt Desert) Selectmen in Mount Desert are taking more time to evaluate the reconstruction plans for Main Street in response to a citizen petition they received earlier this month. The Mt Desert Islander reports petitioners are concerned about what impact the construction work may have on Main Street businesses and they say it may not be necessary to bury power lines. Public Works Director Tony Smith will present options to selectmen on August 6th for routing of utilities and construction scheduling. Selectman hope to pass a resolution on or before August 15th that will outline the next steps.
Sex Proposal Arrest
(Montville) Police in Waldo County have made an arrest stemming back to an incident at a park in Belfast in March. A man approached 2 young boys and propositioned them for sex. The boys found another person in the park who notified police. The Pen Bay Pilot reports a tip led authorities to 75-year-old Edmond Melanson. He’s charged with solicitation of a child to commit a prohibited act.
Domestic Violence Conviction
(Dover-Foxcroft) A jury has convicted a Baileyville man charged in multiple domestic violence cases for an incident in Sangerville in January. WABI-TV reports 29-year old Timothy Curtis was accused of stealing a gun, attacking a woman and holding her at gunpoint. A judge will sentence him later. Police arrested Curtis last year for domestic violence involving a different woman in Old Town. A jury found him not guilty in that case in May. Curtis faces other charges in Piscataquis County.
Frying Pan Assault
(Phippsburg) A Massachusetts native is jailed for beating a Maine woman in the head with a cast-iron pan. 53-year-old James Nields has lived in Sagadahoc County for several years and was renting a room from the 58-year-old Phippsburg woman who he allegedly assaulted last Thursday. The Bangor Daily News reports the victim was hit twice in the head then dragged across the room by her hair. She was taken to Mid Coast Hospital; Nields was taken to Two Bridges Jail charged with Aggravated Assault. Police say Nields had been drinking and became irritated with the victim’s dog.
Building Uptick
(Ellsworth) A number of construction projects in Ellsworth are keeping building companies busy, with the city manager noting an increase in building permits. The Bangor Daily News reports at least 99 housing units are under review or under construction. The Jackson Lab’s $200-million-dollar mouse breeding center is also in the works. City Manager David Cole says there’s a pent-up demand for housing in the area and developers are building as fast they can.
Airport Money
(Maine) Several Maine airports are getting money from the Federal Aviation Administration to make repairs and improvements. The airports vary in size, and include Portland International Jetport, which is getting nearly $3.9 million to reconstruct existing pavement that is no longer useful. The jetport also plans to expand an area for planes near a terminal and improve a taxiway.
