Solar Powered Restrooms
(Bar Harbor) – A combination restroom and storage facility at the MDI High School football field and track will feature solar panels. The Mt. Desert Islander reports the project is estimated to cost about $450-thousand dollars. The solar panels will supply electricity to the power grid – the new building is not expected to draw much power.
Fatal ATV Crash
(Bingham) – One person is dead another critically injured after an ATV accident in Western Maine. WABI-TV reports Sunday night’s crash happened off Route 201 in Bingham. Game Wardens say the side-by-side ATV went off the trail and hit trees. The survivor was airlifted to a hospital. Investigators say speed was one of the factors in the fatal crash.
Electronic Waste Collection
(Lamoine) An electronic waste collection event is planned for this Saturday in Lamoine. All homeowners are invited to dispose of electronic and universal waste including TVs, cellphones, computer monitors, printers, laptops, microwaves and more. Air conditioners have a disposal cost of $20 each. The electronic waste collection is this Saturday from 8 ’til Noon at the Lamoine Transfer Station located on the Lamoine Beach Road.
Graduation Parking
(Ellsworth) Reserved parking for Ellsworth High School graduation is expected to sell out before the June 8th commencement. School officials say no parking passes will be available on graduation day and cars must display parking passes upon entry. Several handicap spaces are available. All other lots are first come, first serve parking. Ellsworth students can buy and pick up their tickets at the concession stand in the cafe during lunch.
Weather Spotter Training
(Machias) The National Weather Service is hosting a weather spotter class in Machias. Attendees will learn how to spot conditions for both summer and winter weather scenarios. The weather service will also discuss how volunteers can enroll to call in weather conditions in their area. The weather spotter training is next Tuesday, June 5th at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Washington County Office. It’s free and begins at 5:30 that evening. Embezzlement Sentence
(Bangor) The man who once served as the Chief Financial Officer of the Brooklin Boat Yard will serve 7-years and 7-months in prison. 51-year-old Steven Nygren, now of Salem Massachusetts, admitted to stealing $815-thousand-dollars from the company. The Bangor Daily News reports Nygren spent about half the money buying the Brooklin General Store, which he no longer owns. Court records say the rest of the money was used to pay for his daughter’s wedding, personal expenses, tickets to sporting events and gambling. Nygren owes the IRS more than a million dollars in back taxes.
Weed’s Future
(Bar Harbor) – Ordinance writers in Bar Harbor are asking for public input on marijuana and whether cultivation, testing, retail and manufacturing facilities should be allowed in town. The town passed a moratorium on marijuana regulation to give the community time to write an ordinance to regulate legalized recreational marijuana. In addition to the types of facilities questions such as distances from day care centers, churches and parks face ordinance writers. The Legislature recently approved laws that require communities to opt in to allow marijuana related facilities in their towns.
Drug Take-Back Results
(New England) The annual drug take-back program a month ago has yielded 44 tons of expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs at 580 collection sites across New England. The Drug Enforcement Administration said it estimates that 10-percent of the drugs were opioid pain killers – removing approximately 88-hundred pounds of opioids from medicine cabinets and potentially keeping them off the streets.
Health Insurance
(Portland) Analysts are expecting another double digit increase for individual insurance rates in Maine under the Affordable Care Act. Community Health Options and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care are the only insurers that continue to offer ACA-compliant individual health insurance. They face a June 4th deadline for submitting their 2019 rate requests.
Timber Harvesting
(Augusta) The Maine Forest Service says use of forestry best management practices has helped prevent sediment from entering water bodies as a result of timber harvesting. The statement is one of the takeaways from a study the service conducted about forestry and best management practices at timber harvests. Best management practices, also called “BMPs,” are voluntary measures designed to protect water quality.
