Abuse Report – DHHS
(Augusta) – Maine’s Human Services Commissioner says his agency found the same shortcomings that a government watchdog agency did when it reviewed the Child and Family Services office. In a press release to Star 97.7, Ricker Hamilton says to focus is to make sure the two tragedies under investigation never happen again. A program review agency found poor supervision and job performance played a role in either the death of a 10-year old Stockton Springs girl or a 4-year old from Wiscasset.
Memorial Day
(Ellsworth) – Yes, there will be a Memorial Day Parade in Ellsworth. Police Chief Glenn Moshier tells Star 97.7 the parade will line up at 9:30 at the Moore Community Center on State Street and the parade starts at 10AM. The procession will stop at the Union River Bridge for a brief Ceremony, then to City Hall where it ends. The Downeast Family YMCA will also tie up traffic on High Street with a 1-mile run Monday morning. Lamoine also plans a Memorial Day ceremony at 10AM at the Veterans Memorial at the Town Hall, but that will have no impact on traffic.
Route 3 Bar Harbor Halts
(Bar Harbor) – Motorists in Bar Harbor will get a break from construction for the holiday weekend. Work stopped at the end of the day yesterday and will take a break until Tuesday morning. Construction crews are currently working on drainage from Days Inn to the College of the Atlantic and utilizing a detour on the Park Loop Road. This is the second summer of Route 3 reconstruction which should be complete next Spring.
Former Lawmaker Charged
(Belfast) – A former Waldo County state legislator now living in California once again faces charges over funds he handled for an elderly woman. Village Soup dot-com reports Robert Lindell is accused of violating bail conditions and failing to pay state income taxes. Lindell was already charged with stealing potentially millions of dollars from an elderly Belfast woman whose funds he managed before her death.
Island Explorer Bus
(Schoodic Peninsula) The Island Explorer bus system began offering service this week on the Schoodic Peninsula. Downeast Transportation general manager Paul Murphy says this is the second year the bus service is available early to accommodate campers who visit the area before the busy season begins. Bus rides are free but donation boxes are placed on every bus for anyone who would like to contribute. The full summer schedule begins June 23rd and runs through late August. Alleged Killer Gives Birth
(Wiscasset) The mother accused of beating her 10-year-old daughter to death in Stockton Springs gave birth to a baby boy Wednesday night. Sharon Carrillo was 7-months pregnant when she was arrested in February. She and her husband Julio Carrillo are charged with depraved indifference murder in the death of Marissa Kennedy. WABI-TV reports the new baby is the couple’s 4th child. Mr. Carillo’s parents have custody of the couples’ two toddler children and are seeking custody of the infant.
Kids Finger Prints
(Hancock) Concerned citizens alerted the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office about a man going door-to-door in the Hancock area asking to fingerprint children. Deputies located the man and found he works for a legitimate insurance company and there was no wrong doing, but the man failed to show proper identification when he visited homes. Sheriff Scott Kane tells Star 97.7 parents should keep their children’s fingerprints somewhere, and that can be done by making an appointment with the jail, which also has a retina scan machine used for identification.
Cancer Fundraiser
(SW Harbor) Live music is planned at the Upper Deck Restaurant in Southwest Harbor tomorrow in memory of Steven DeMuro, who died in February at 53 following a 2-and-a-half year battle with intestinal cancer. Restaurant co-owner Debby Dubois says two bands her brother played with will perform during the celebration of his life. Music from Mondo Charlie and Band from Eden is from Noon to 5 tomorrow at the Upper Deck . Proceeds from the entire day will benefit the Beth C Wright Cancer Resource Center.
Teacher-Gift Cards
(Ellsworth) Teachers at Ellsworth Elementary Middle School are getting a nice little boost this afternoon. Subaru owners participating in a recent vote at Stanley Subaru chose EEMS teachers to receive $100 Hannaford gift cards. Stanley Subaru spokesman Spencer Patterson King says the gesture is an extension of Teacher Appreciation Week. Stanley Subaru is also hosting the Abbe Museum education team later this morning to honor them as part of Teacher Appreciation Month.
Enforcement Details
(Ellsworth) Motorists need to be on their best behavior the next couple weeks. Law enforcement officers are checking for seatbelts as part of the Click it or Ticket campaign. Ellsworth police chief Glenn Moshier says the Bureau of Highway Safety has provided nationwide funding for Click it or Ticket. And in anticipation of a busy Memorial Day weekend officers will also be watching for speed, OUI, and distracted driving offenses.
Vaccine Rates
(Augusta) Maine health officials say vaccination opt-out rates for the state’s kindergarteners increased during the 2017-2018 school year. A report released this week by the Maine Center for Disease Control & Prevention says, 5 percent of kindergarteners were opted out by their parents this year for philosophic of religious reasons. Health officials say low vaccination rates are responsible for outbreaks of preventable diseases.
Memorial Service
(Auburn) The family of a Maine boy swept away by a river current has announced a public memorial service. The Sun Journal reports the McFarlands returned to Bonney Park in Auburn and thanked the community for their support Wednesday, nearly a month after their 5-year-old son Valerio McFarland fell into the nearby Androscoggin River. The family will hold a memorial service for Valerio on a walking bridge near the park Thursday evening.
