Miss Maine/Miss USA
(Shreveport, LA) – A young Trenton woman finished in the top 10 in last night’s Miss USA beauty contest. Marina “Rosie” Gray serves as a Sergeant in the National Guard, and made it through to the top 15, and after the swimsuit competition to the top 10. She did not get past the evening gown competition of the contest won by Miss Nebraska. Gray grew up in Trenton and attended Ellsworth High School before moving and graduating early from John Bapst High and joining the military.
10 Year old, Car Chase
(Orrington) – Deputies in Penobscot County say a 10-year old boy driving a stolen car in Orrington damaged a Holden Police Department cruiser that stopped him. It happened Sunday when the Sheriff’s Department responded to a report of the missing juvenile. Chief Deputy William Birch reports to Star 97.7 that officers received information that the youngster was driving the car on the Johnson Mill Road and spotted the vehicle which initially stopped then tried to take off before the Holden officer boxed it in. No one is hurt, police did not identify the youngster.
Thorndike Fire
(Thorndike) – Everyone escaped from a burning Thorndike home without injury, but the house and a garage and four vehicles are in ruins this morning after the blaze. WABI-TV reports the fire call came in around 5-o’clock last evening on Depot Street. The fire appears to have started on a front deck then spread to the house and garage. No word on an exact cause.
Carmel Fire
(Carmel) – Route 2 in Carmel has reopened after a massive recycling yard fire yesterday brought 16-fire departments to the scene. The Bangor Daily News reports the first calls to the Ideal Recycling yard came in shortly before 11:30 yesterday morning with witnesses reporting a large black mushroom shaped smoke cloud. The blaze involved a 100-foot wide pile of junk cars awaiting recycling processing. No injuries are reported.
Dirt Bike Fatal
(Litchfield) Maine state police say a Litchfield man died when his dirt bike veered off the road and struck a utility pole and trees. 35-year-old Derek Parker was not wearing a helmet Sunday morning when he crashed, and he was pronounced dead at a Lewiston hospital. A friend found Parker when he didn’t return from the ride. The crash remains under investigation.
Workforce Discussion
(Ellsworth) Small business owners and area employers are invited to a round-table discussion about workforce challenges. Senator Brian Langley is initiating the conversation and wants business owners to come armed with their stories. Langley says in the past it was mostly Maine’s tourism industry that struggled to find workers, but he says that’s not the case anymore. Langley serves on the Labor, Commerce, Research and Economic Development Committee and wants to bring these local stories to Augusta for change. The Workforce Discussion is Wednesday morning at 10 in the Ellsworth City Hall auditorium.
School Vandals-Reward
(Poland) Investigators with the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office are still trying to identify the two males who vandalized 22 school buses and one pickup truck belonging to the RSU 16 school district. The crime occurred early last Wednesday, forcing officials to cancel school that day for nearly 17-hundred students in the towns of Poland, Minot and Mechanic Falls. The Bangor Daily News reports an anonymous couple who lives within the school district has offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved.
Cannabis Extraction
(Biddeford) Public safety officials in Maine are warning of an increase in people turning to dangerous methods of extracting cannabis concentrates as marijuana becomes legal in the state. Firefighters in Ellsworth and Biddeford have encountered fires at homes where people were manufacturing butane hash oil. State Fire Marshal Joe Thomas says those fires are “a preview of coming attractions.”
Party Affiliations
(Augusta) The deadline for Mainers to switch parties before the June 12 primary elections is drawing near. Election officials say the deadline is Friday in most municipalities to switch parties to vote in Republican or Democratic primaries. Unenrolled voters don’t face the same requirement; they can register with a party on the day of the elections on June 12. And there’s no need to register with a party to vote on a referendum question, or in local elections.
Medicaid Expansion Suit
(Augusta) Groups that are suing Maine Republican Gov. Paul LePage’s administration over voter-approved Medicaid expansion have filed court documents challenging the governor’s claims that the Legislature must appropriate funding first. Maine Equal Justice Partners sued after the administration missed a deadline to apply for $525 million in federal funding. The Portland Press Herald reports the group said in a court filing Friday submitting the application “does not require funds not already available.”
