Drug Sentence
(Bangor) – A 35-year old Bangor man is headed to federal prison for the next 8-years for dealing heroin and crack cocaine. The US Attorney’s office tells Star 97.7 that Yanel Greene will also spend 3-years on supervised release after his release in 2026. Greene brought the drugs from New York City back to Bangor and distributed them to dealers who would bring the drug proceeds back to him. The drug sales took place between 2013 and 2015 and Greene was part of the same ring that saw Mario Lee sentenced to nearly 19-years in prison.
Cigarette Caution
(Augusta) – State officials are asking smoking motorists to refrain from tossing lit cigarettes out their car window. The Department of Transportation tells Star 97.7 that recent roadside fires are blamed on cigarettes that ignited grasses and brush. Parts of the state were at very high fire danger as the weather warms up. State public safety department officials ask that cigarettes be completely extinguished inside the vehicle and not thrown out a window.
Sumner Site Approved
(Sullivan) – The new Sumner High School will sit on the same property as the current high school. That’s the vote of those who showed up to discuss where to locate the newly approved school. The Ellsworth American reports the new building will hold 500-students, including middle schoolers. The architect says there is concern about utilizing the current property which includes baseball and softball fields paid for with federal funding. A final school design will go up for public approval early next year.
SW Hbr Cell Tower
(Southwest Harbor) – Planners in Southwest Harbor have approved a new cell phone tower, despite objections from a couple of neighbors. The Mt. Desert Islander reports the nearly 200-foot tall tower will go up on the Freeman Ridge Road. Neighbors objected to noise during the construction process and required lights on the tower. The Planning Board said the objections came in at the last second – they’ve been working on the tower application since last October.
Keg Hunt
(Ellsworth) Saturday will be jam packed full of events in Ellsworth. The day begins with the Card Brook Cleanup at 9:30, followed by the Union River Festival at Noon, then at 2 o’clock it’s the Great Golden Keg Hunt. Union Square board member Patricia Patterson King says you must be at least 21 to participate in the scavenger hunt downtown. Register online at: Union Square M E dot Org. The grand prize is worth more than a thousand dollars.
Alewife Counting
(Orland) Orland resident Jake Maier is heading up an alewife counting effort again this year, this time at the Toddy Pond Dam. Volunteers will count alewives as they return to the Narramissic River watershed. Maier says counting these fish over the next few months helps the Department of Marine Resources determine whether the Toddy Pond fish ladder is passable. On-site volunteer training is Sunday afternoon at 4 at the Toddy Pond Dam on Route 1 in Orland.
Every 15 Minutes
(Ellsworth) Police cruisers, fire trucks and first responders can be seen at Ellsworth High School again today as part of the Every 15 Minutes Program. The goal of the eye-opening, emotionally jarring curriculum is to teach Junior and Senior students about the dangers of impaired and distracted driving. The Every 15 Minutes Program is put on every 2 years by the Ellsworth Police Department.
Marine Flares
(Maine) The state fire marshal’s office is reminding boat owners as they prepare their vessels and other watercraft for the summer season, they may find outdated marine flares and wonder what to do with them. Commercial fishermen may also have marine flares that are expired. The fire marshal’s office says call their office in Augusta and they’ll make arrangements to pickup the unused flares and will dispose of them properly.
Weatherizing Ellsworth
(Ellsworth) Homeowners in the Ellsworth-area are invited to an informational seminar on the benefits of home energy savings option. “Weatherize Ellsworth” is an initiative from the City of Ellsworth, the Ellsworth Green Committee and the Natural Resources Council of Maine. They’ll discuss Efficiency Maine incentives that lower the costs of home energy savings projects. Weatherize Ellsworth is free, happening next Wednesday the 9th at 6:30PM the Moore Community Center. Conservation Acquisition
(Hancock/Washington) Conservation groups will purchase more than 17-thousand acres of forestland in Hancock and Washington Counties to protect wildlife habitat and maintain natural woodlands for outdoorsmen to enjoy. The Nature Conservancy will acquire The Spring River-Narraguagus Forest property in Hancock County. New England Forestry Foundation will purchase the Venture Brook Forest property in Washington County. And the Blue Hill Heritage trust will buy the Meadowbrook Forest property in Hancock County.
Veto-Pot
(Augusta) – Lawmakers have opened the door to legal recreational marijuana sales in Maine. Both the house and senate voted by wide margins to override the governor’s veto of the bill to allow commercial pot sales. The Governor said he couldn’t violate federal law. The bill will prohibit sales near schools, eliminates pot social clubs, and limits the number of plants people can possess. Growers will have to pay an excise tax of $335-dollars a pound and charge a 10-percent sales tax on retail marijuana.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Many employers are quietly taking what once would have been a radical step: They’re dropping marijuana from the drug tests they require of prospective employees. Marijuana testing – a fixture at large American employers for at least 30 years – excludes too many potential workers, experts say, at a time when filling jobs is more challenging than it’s been in nearly two decades.
