Kicked off ballot
(Augusta) – Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap rejected more nominating petition signatures submitted by a Bar Harbor republican who wants to run for the US Senate. If a judge upholds Dunlap’s findings, Max Linn’s name will not appear on the primary ballot in June. Linn’s opponent, Eric Brakey, challenged his petitions, noting some were from dead people and others that appeared on the petitions came from people who claimed they didn’t sign.
Fatal Accident Plea
(Ellsworth) – A plea agreement will free a 43-year old Bangor man from jail and drop a manslaughter charge. The Bangor Daily News reports Miguel Garcia pled guilty to reckless conduct charges. A judge refused to allow a blood test to be entered into evidence at a trial which led to the plea agreement. Garcia was sentenced to the 9-months he spent in jail awaiting trial. He was behind the wheel of a commercial truck which veered onto the wrong side of Route 3 in Bar Harbor in September 2015, striking and killing a North Carolina tourist.
River Mishap
(Auburn) – A 9-year old boy is fighting for his life and his 5-year old brother is missing after the two of them ended up in the Androscoggin River in Auburn. Police tell Newscenter, Maine the 9-year old had tried to save his brother who is still missing. Their father and a sister also tried to save the two. Firefighters were able to recover the older boy and Lifeflight took him to the hospital after rescuers administered CPR. Authorities did not identify the children who were supposed to start school today in Auburn.
Bocce Tournament
(Castine) Rain postponed last week’s Penobscot-Piscataquis-Hancock Area Special Olympics’ Bocce Tournament. The rescheduled event kicks off tomorrow morning at 10:30 at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine. Associate athletics director Tricia Carver says the annual event has grown over the years and holds a special place in their hearts. Carver says about 60 teams will participate tomorrow and about 100 volunteers help make the Bocce Tournament possible.
Robbery Arrest
(Lyman) State police handcuffed a Lyman man after following his trail of crimes. Troop-A received a reckless driving complaint Sunday alleging the suspect almost hit a kid on a bicycle. A short time later they got a call about an attempted robbery at the Goodwin Mills General Store in Lyman. Employees identified the suspect as 36-year-old Travis Dewitt. They say he laid down behind the counter and when asked to leave Dewitt allegedly tried stealing items from behind the counter and from a paying customer. Dewitt then fled the store in a vehicle. Police tried to stop Dewitt twice but terminated the chase due to unsafe speeds. Dewitt later turned himself in and is charged with Robbery, Eluding an Officer and Violating Release Conditions.
Accidental Drowning
(Lisbon) The Maine medical examiner’s office has declared the weekend death of a woman in Lisbon to be an accidental drowning. The victim, identified as 61-year-old Carol Plourde, of Lisbon, was discovered in a pond on private property. A property owner spotted Plourde’s vehicle Sunday evening and then found her body.
Green Drinks
(Ellsworth) The Heart of Ellsworth’s next Green Drinks social gathering is tonight at The Grand on Main Street. Heart of Ellsworth executive director Cara Romano says she was inspired to bring the event to Ellsworth after learning of its success and mission in other Maine cities. The beneficiary this month is the Beth Wright Cancer Resource Center. Green Drinks begins at 5:30 at The Grand. It’s $8 to get in or just $5 if you bring your own reusable cup.
Car Theft Arrest
(Augusta) Augusta police have arrested the man they believe is responsible for multiple vehicle thefts over the past few months. Evidence was obtained from stolen vehicles found abandoned in gravel pits and wooded areas. As a result police arrested 25-year-old Carl Jackson of Augusta on 6 counts of Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle and 5 counts of Felony Theft. Jackson is held without bail at the Kennebec County Jail.
Blue Hill Cleanup
(Blue Hill) The Blue Hill Cares Community Group has organized the 3rd annual Roadside Cleanup throughout the entire town. It’s a way to tidy up the area before the busy season starts. Event spokesperson Chrissy Allen says eager volunteers will meet at 8 Saturday morning at the Blue Hill Consolidated School. For details, find the Blue Hill Cares Community Group on Facebook.
KW&W Signs
(Augusta) Governor Paul LePage is relenting on his ban on road signs directing motorists to a national monument that he opposes. A LePage spokeswoman says the Maine Department of Transportation will allow signs now that the interior secretary has recommended keeping the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument and a new request for signs has been made.
Fire Count
(Augusta) The Maine Forest Service says the number of wildfires in the state is approaching 100 and that more than 60 acres have burned so far this year. Regional Forest Ranger Jeff Currier says rangers responded to 20 wildfires Monday. Fire officials say the spring combination of warm temperatures and low humidity pose a risk.
Arson-Mentally Disabled
(Casco) Lawyers for two men facing arson charges in a fire that destroyed a historic Maine schoolhouse say the men are intellectually disabled. The Portland Press Herald reports an attorney for 22-year-old Devin Richardson-Gurney told a judge Monday he has autism. An attorney for 20-year-old Edward Scott says he receives services from an organization that helps the intellectually disabled. Prosecutors say the two men set the Friends School House in Casco on fire Sunday.
