Airport Arrest
(Bangor) – As a 26-year old man waited for his luggage at Bangor International Airport, police quietly moved in and slapped handcuffs on him. Javon Richardson who was living in Brewer was wanted in North Carolina for a killing last Wednesday. Bangor police tell Star 97.7 they got information from a Sheriff’s Department in North Carolina that they wanted Richardson and his plane was about to land in Bangor. He’s held at the Penobscot County jail pending extradition to North Carolina.
Home Invasion
(Nobleboro) – Police in the Lincoln County area are on the lookout for a young man who allegedly tried to steal goods from a home in Nobleboro. The Pen Bay Pilot reports the burglar broke into a home yesterday morning while it was still occupied. The man, described as in his 20’s, used a tool in a threatening manner toward the occupant, then fled into an older Ford Explorer. The Sheriff’s Department has put together a sketch of the robber wearing a hoodie.
Tick Talk
(Ellsworth) Despite the amount of snow we had this winter, ticks began springing up early in our region. The next Heart of Ellsworth community conversation will focus on ticks and what you need to know about them. Heart of Ellsworth executive director Cara Romano says they’re bringing in an expert to lead the Tick Talk. The Tick Talk is at Flexit Cafe on Main Street in Ellsworth tomorrow night at 5:30. It’s free and open to the public.
Rotary Club-Volunteering
(Ellsworth) In honor of National Volunteer Appreciation Week, Star 97-7 is spotlighting area organizations that define volunteerism. Ellsworth Rotary Club community service director Clyde Cushing says Rotary members take on many projects annually – a big one is helping the Loaves and Fishes food pantry. The Ellsworth Rotary Club’s 67th annual charity auction is coming up May 18th at Big Cat’s Catering in Trenton.
BHHT Spring Lectures
(Blue Hill) Blue Hill Heritage Trust will kick off their 3-part spring Conservation Lecture Series tomorrow. Outreach director Chrissy Allen says the evening begins with a light reception at 6:30 followed by the guest speaker presenting at 7. All 3 of their lectures are held at the Blue Hill Public Library. Assaulting an Officer
(Bangor) A Bangor man with a criminal history is charged after allegedly biting an officer and hitting another in the face. Bangor police responded to a domestic disturbance call at an Essex Street apartment building. WABI-TV reports 29-year-old Joshua Ireland refused to cooperate with police and struggled while they tried to handcuff him. When officers went to buckle his seatbelt Ireland allegedly bit one of them, managed to unbuckle his seatbelt and smashed the rear passenger window of the cruiser. When police tried to move Ireland out of the car he allegedly hit an officer in the face. He’s charged with assaulting an officer, domestic violence assault, criminal mischief and refusing to submit to arrest.
Stabbing Arrest
(Hampden) A Hampden woman is held at the Penobscot County Jail following a stabbing Friday night. Police say that a 53-year-old man is listed in stable condition with extensive injuries to his throat. Police responded to an apartment building on Main Road North in Hampden where they found the alleged suspect, 38-year-old Sonya Dupray. She’s charged with attempted murder.
Vehicle Thefts
(Augusta) Augusta police are telling residents to lock their vehicles after responding to several recent vehicle thefts city wide. They say cars have been stolen from driveways and private property and in most cases the vehicles are unlocked with the keys inside. Police continue to investigate to identify the people responsible. If you have any leads Augusta police want to hear from you.
Falcons at ANP
(Bar Harbor) Acadia National Park has closed certain cliffs and trails to the public to protect peregrine falcons during their nesting period. Research has shown that nesting peregrine falcons are particularly vulnerable to human activities, which can disturb the adults and make them less attentive to the eggs or chicks. The Jordan Cliffs Trail, Valley Cove Trail, Precipice Trail, and a portion of the Orange & Black Path are closed to public entry until further notice.
Orphaned Cub
(Caribou) Game Wardens in Aroostook County rescued an orphaned cub last week following a car accident on Route 1 in Caribou that killed the mother bear. A warden devised a plan with wildlife biologist Randy Cross, who’s researched bears in Maine for 35 years. The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife tracks over 80 collared female bears and Cross knew of a reliable 11-year-old sow who could be the new mom. Cross took the cub to the female bear’s location and placed the orphan at the mouth of the den. The baby quickly went in and it leaned against its new mother. Cross says when they emerge the sow will take care of the new cub as if it were her own.
Hospital Funds Dispute
(Augusta) The state auditor says Maine should stop using millions of dollars in federal funds for a psychiatric hospital that’s lost federal certification. State Auditor Pola Buckley says the state is continuing to use such funds despite facing a $51 million-dollar penalty from the federal government for doing so. Governor Paul LePage’s administration disagrees with Buckley’s finding and says federal regulators have not offered clear guidance on how Maine can be recertified.
Poliquin-Primaries
(Augusta) Maine Republican U.S. Representative Bruce Poliquin reports more than $2.2 million in his campaign war chest as Democratic opponents prepare for the June primary. Democrats Jared Golden, Lucas St. Clair, Jonathan Fulford and Craig Olson are set to compete in the June primary to face the congressman in November.
