Hermon Incident
(Hermon) – It took nearly 4-hours for deputies to talk a possibly armed man out of a home on Route 2 in Hermon last night. They’d responded to the residence near the Morgan Hill Center after two other residents reported they’d been assaulted and the attacker had weapons. Deputies closed down the road and got the man into a driveway where they arrested him. WABI-TV reports the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department has not yet released names.
School Building Vote
(Camden) – Voters in Camden and Rockport will decide the fate of the empty Mary E Taylor school building next November. Village Soup dot-com reports the school committee voted to hire an architect to come up with a re-use plan for the former elementary school built in the 1920s. The school committee had rejected a plan to sell the building, but previously had favored demolishing the structure to build a new elementary school.
Emmaus Homeless Shelter
(Ellsworth) The Emmaus Homeless Shelter is focusing its efforts on helping locals get into their own apartments. Star 97-7 is holding a Re-Gift-a-thon outside Hannaford in Ellsworth tomorrow to help collect items for the Emmaus Homeless Shelter. Director MJ Boylan says you can help by donating cleaning supplies. Boylan says monetary donations are also appreciated.
Officer Cleared
(Waldoboro) The Maine Attorney General’s Office says a Waldoboro police officer was justified when he fatally shot a man who opened fire first. Last January officer John Lash responded to a call that 57-year-old Jon Alspaugh assaulted his wife and threatened to kill her. When Lash entered the home Alspaugh pulled out a handgun and fired 3 shots at Lash, one of them striking him. Lash then shot at Alspaugh six times and killed him. Village Soup-dot com reports a statement from the Attorney General’s Office says it was necessary for Lash to use deadly force to protect himself from further injury or death.
Elver Licenses Awarded
(Maine) The Department of Marine Resources has awarded elver licenses to 11 Mainers. More than 31-hundred people applied. Each new license holder will receive a minimum 4-pound quota, which could net nearly $6-thousand-dollars in income. Quota for the new license holders comes from licenses that were not renewed in 2017 and therefore became available for redistribution to license holders. This year’s elver season begins at March 22nd and ends on June 7th.
Day 4 of Trial
(Bangor) Two retired Maine State Police detectives testified yesterday on day 4 of Scott Fournier’s murder trial. WABI-TV reports prosecutors showed crime scene photographs taken the day the body of 16-year-old Joyce McLain was found behind Schenck High School. Detectives recounted the details of the investigation they performed more than 37-years ago.
Plea Agreement
(Kennebec Cty) Prosecutors will drop 19 sexual assault charges against a former Lincoln County sheriff’s deputy as part of a plea agreement. The Bangor Daily News reports Kenneth Hatch must plead guilty to providing a place for minors to drink alcohol in exchange for the agreement. In November a Kennebec County jury found Hatch not guilty on 2 counts of sexual abuse of a minor and furnishing marijuana to minor, but they were hung on the other 22 sex crime charges involving 3 teen girls, some occurring in Hatch’s cruiser while on duty. Hatch will appear in Knox County Superior Court today (1/26) to pay a $1-thousand-dollar fine, and will serve no jail time.
Baby Dies
(Skowhegan) Skowhegan police say the baby delivered by emergency C-section following a car accident that killed his mother has died. The mother, 27-year-old Desiree Strout and her family were on their way to the hospital early Monday morning so she could be medically induced. Her SUV hit a patch of black ice and rolled several times on Route 2 in Skowhegan, killing her and injuring her husband and 8-year-old daughter. Strout’s son was born after an emergency C-section and had been listed in critical condition until his passing Thursday.
Manslaughter Indictment
(Bangor) The Medford man accused of texting while driving and causing a fatal crash in Alton was indicted by the Penobscot County grand jury. 25-year-old Tyler Creighton had just left a methadone clinic before the November crash that killed 63-year-old Robin Gardner of LaGrange, his brother’s mother-in-law. The Bangor Daily News reports Creighton was out on bail for an OUI charge that’s still is pending. If convicted of manslaughter he faces up to 30 years in prison and a $50-thousand-dollar fine. He also could be ordered to reimburse the Gardner family for funeral costs.
