Home Invasion Arrest
(Millinocket) – An alleged killer’s trail that began last week in Millinocket led Maine State Police to North Carolina. Detectives arrested 38-year old Christopher Murray and will charge him with murder when he is returned to Maine. They’re also seeking 43-year old Tony Locklear in connection with last week’s home invasion and shooting that left 59-year old Wayne Lapierre dead and his 33-year old wife hospitalized with gunshot wounds. So far police have not said what led them to suspect Murray and Locklear.
Ducktrap Fire
(Belfast) – Firefighters in Belfast quickly put out a blaze at a seafood products company, but the smoke did a lot of damage. Construction work at the Ducktrap River seafood wholesaler may have started the blaze at about 9-o’clock yesterday morning. Firefighters from Belfast, Searsport and Morrill responded to the scene. The fire was contained to an addition that was under construction – no injuries are reported.
Bangor Robbery
(Bangor) – A 35-year old Bangor man is charged with robbing a downtown restaurant. The Bangor Police Department arrested Michael Deshane yesterday in connection with Wednesday evening’s robbery at the Thai Siam Restaurant on Main Street. Employees say the robber demanded money and acted like he had a gun. Detectives did not find any gun when they arrested Deshane.
Child Assault
(Bangor) – A 25-year old Bangor man faces aggravated assault charges after he allegedly injured his 2-month old son. Spokesman Lt. Tim Cotton reports to Star 97.7 that Joensen Jean is held at the Penobscot County Jail and the investigation continues. Jean was arrested a week ago after detectives looked into how the baby sustained injuries.
Fire Training Facility
(Bar Harbor) – A plan to build a fire training facility has run into a barrier – money. The Mt. Desert Islander reports Bar Harbor’s town council has refused to fund $42-thousand dollars for a design for the proposed facility near MDI High School. The estimated construction cost is near $2-million dollars. Selectmen in Southwest Harbor also questioned the planned facility costs while Mt. Desert and Tremont have expressed support for the idea, but have not talked money yet.
5 Men Charged
(Calais) – A shooting and a police chase in Calais ended with 5-men under arrest. Police chief David Randall reports to Star 97.7 that they arrested 27-year old Stephen Perkins of Baileyville and 4-New York men after a reported shooting near the Calais Motor Inn late Wednesday night. Officers found a car allegedly involved, but the driver fled and four others took off in the vehicle with officers giving chase. They caught the driver in Calais and the other four in Brookton after the chase up Route 1. Several agencies, including drug enforcement assisted. No one is hurt.
Ellsworth Ice Rink
(Ellsworth) The Ellsworth Recreation Commission hopes to start filling the ice rink today at Knowlton Park. Volunteer Morgan Sarro tells Star 97-7 they had hope to begin the process yesterday but it was too windy. The goal is to have the ice rink ready for the New Year. It’s free and open to the public from 6am ’til 7pm, except during hockey practice. Details are posted on the Ellsworth Ice Rink Facebook page.
Hypothermia
(Local) Temperatures this low can lead to hypothermia if you’re not careful. Blue Hill Memorial Hospital’s chief medical officer Dr Mike Murnik says hypothermia is a medical emergency that occurs when your body loses heat faster than it can produce it. Dr Murnik says if you have to go outside dress in layers but be sure clothing isn’t so confining that it cuts off circulation, and most important – wear a hat – because you lose a lot of heat through your head.
Winter Pet Safety
(Local) It’s not just the humans that need to watch out for hypothermia and frost bite during this cold snap. The Ark Animal Shelter executive director Vincent Ewald recommends limiting the amount of time your pet stays outside.
Blueberry Stats
(Maine) Maine’s wild blueberry industry wants to boost demand – and expanding sales to schools is a bright spot. The Wild Blueberry Commission of Maine said federal statistics indicate sales through the Blueberry School Foodservice Program grew 57-percent this year.
Embezzlement Stats
(Bangor) Data shows a sharp increase of embezzlement arrests in Maine, and experts say the number could be higher because the majority of cases aren’t reported to police. The Bangor Daily News reports 67 people were arrested for embezzlement in 2016, a 46 percent increase from the previous year. Most of those charged worked for governments, banks or nonprofit organizations.
