Murder Charge
(Wiscasset) – State Police have charged a 43-year old Wiscasset woman with murder for the death of her fiancée’s granddaughter. 4-year old Kendall Chick died last Friday. The Medical Examiner’s office says the little girl suffered blunt trauma to her abdomen. Police took Shawna Gatto to jail in Wiscasset yesterday.
Meth Sentence
(Belfast) – A 34 year old Stockton Springs man will spend a year in jail for making methamphetamine. WABI-TV reports a judge sentenced William Johnson this week. Drug agents arrested Johnson last March and he pled guilty in September to operating a meth making operation. Police found evidence of drug making activity at Johnson’s home but could not determine if he used the house to mix up the drugs.
Burton Sentence
(Bangor) – Prosecutors have recommended a life sentence for convicted killer Robert Burton of Abbott. A judge will impose a sentence today. Earlier this year a jury found Burton guilty of murdering his former girlfriend, Stephanie Gebo, in 2015. Following the shooting death Burton led police on the longest manhunt in state history.
MacQuinn Appeals
(Hall Quarry) – A construction company turned down for mining proposals in both Mt. Desert and Lamoine will appeal the rulings from both communities. Harold MacQuinn Incorporated in Hancock had sought to continue to quarry in the Hall Quarry village of Mt. Desert, but the proposal was rejected in part because continuous mining had not taken place. In Lamoine, MacQuinn filed an appeal this week on a ruling from the town’s Planning Board that an expanded gravel mining operation would threaten drinking water and have an adverse impact on neighbors.
Medomak Principal Resigns
(Waldoboro) – The principal at Medomak Valley High School has tendered his resignation immediately. Village Soup dot-com reports Andrew Cavanaugh has not been at the Waldoboro high school for several weeks. No one is saying what led to the resignation, but the school had referred a complaint about inappropriate conduct by a staff member to the Knox County Sheriff’s Department. An investigation revealed no criminal activity. Cavanaugh was the long time assistant principal at the school and promoted to the position in 2015.
Elver Poaching Sentence
(Bangor) – A pair of elver dealers will spend 6-months in federal prison for selling the tiny eels illegally caught by a Maine fisherman in New Jersey. The glass eels fetch big bucks. The US Attorney’s Office reports to Star 97.7 that Yarann Im and Thomas Choi of Maryland both received their sentences this week, a day after fisherman Albert Cray who is from Maine admitted he caught the eels where harvesting is prohibited. The two dealers knew the glass eels were not legally harvested.
Porn Arrest
(Auburn) – State Police have arrested one of their own dispatchers and charged him with possessing child pornography. Spokesman Steve McCausland reports to Star 97.7 that 43-year old Eric Kramarz of Auburn is on paid administrative leave. Investigators from the computer crimes task force seized Kramarz’ cell phone after they received reports he had obtained explicit photos of young girls with whom he’d communicated over social media. Kramarz worked out of the Gray dispatch center for the past 16-years.
ACLU – Long Creek
(Portland) – The American Civil Liberties Union has called on the State to shut down the Long Creek Youth Development Center in Portland. A report released today by the ACLU’s executive director Alison Beyea, concluded that children suffering from mental illness do not get treatment, and staff abuses residents with inappropriate use of force. Beyea called Long Creek a failed model.
