Murder Verdict
(Bangor) – A 29-year old Brooklyn New York man faces up to life in prison after jurors found him guilty of murdering a Bangor man 2-years ago. Robert Hansley is the 2nd man convicted of killing 38-year old Robert Kennedy and wounding another Brooklyn man. Thomas Ferguson was convicted earlier this year and will find out his sentence next month. Hansley’s attorney says he plans to appeal the conviction.
Taxation Decision
(Augusta) – The towns of Eddington and Bradley will have to find more than $530-thousand dollars to pay back Emera Maine in a case of double taxation. The state supreme court ruled that even though the utility supplied incorrect information that it owned a transmission line, the towns also assessed another company for the same lines. The high court upheld a lower court ruling that the assessment boiled down to double taxation that is not legal. An Emera accountant admitted she made a mistake when over-reporting the transmission line values.
Wreaths Across America
(Local) Wreaths Across America will start its journey to Arlington National Cemetery this Sunday. Spokeswoman Susan Patten says the trip begins at Narraguagus High School with a private breakfast and greeting by national honor society students, then the convoy will hit the road. 245-thousand-700 wreaths will be placed at Arlington National Cemetery December 16th
Bridge Closure
(Prospect) – A woman who carried a loaded shotgun as she walked across then sat on the Penobscot Narrows Bridge led police to close down the bridge yesterday. Motorists started calling 9-1-1 at about 10:30 in the morning as the woman walked across the bridge. State Troopers, deputies from Hancock and Waldo Counties and Bucksport police closed down the bridge and talked with the woman through a P-A system. She set down the gun and police took her to a hospital for evaluation.
Former Christian School sold
(Trenton) – The building that once housed the now defunct Acadia Christian School is under new ownership after an auction. A corporation headed by Thomas Alley of Bar Harbor purchased what is now the Acadia Events Center from John Linnehan for 1-point-4 million dollars. The Mt. Desert Islander reports Linnehan still maintains an office in the complex, but it’s not clear what plans that Alley has for the buildings.
Scarborough Drug Arrest
(Scarborough) State troopers seized lots of drugs and arrested a New Jersey man following traffic stop on Interstate-95 in Scarborough. A trooper pulled over 35-year-old Jason Lara-Matos Wednesday night. The officer called in another trooper and his dog to assist. The dog alerted police to narcotics in the car. A search turned up more than 100 grams of cocaine. And more drugs were found on Lara-Matos while at the Cumberland County Jail. He’s charged with unlawful trafficking of cocaine and ecstasy.
Vassalboro Drug Arrests
(Vassalboro) Maine Drug Agents hauled 3 people to jail after a drug bust in Vassalboro. Agents were watching 33-year-old Sarah Fuschwanz for an alleged heroin sale and when they went to arrest her at home Wednesday afternoon she drove off with two others in the car. State police assisted pulled over the car and investigators quickly took Fuschwanz into custody. They searched and arrested her passengers, 33-year-old Tania Murphy of Hallowell and 51-year old Andre Fields of New York. Agents seized Crack cocaine, heroin, powdered cocaine, prescriptions and cash were confiscated. The trio is in the Kennebec County Jail on various drug charges.
VA & Humane Societies
(Nat’l) The Department of Veterans Affairs is partnering with the Humane Society of the United States to encourage Veterans to consider owning pets and volunteering at local animal shelters. The announcement came Wednesday, the day before the anniversary of Pearl Harbor, as an initiative to support Veterans’ health and well being. VA and the HSUS plan to work with community organizations to establish connections with local VA medical facilities to help link Veterans with animals ready for adoption in their local communities.
Town Manager search
(Southwest Harbor) Selectmen in Southwest Harbor may enlist help to find their next town manager. The Mt Desert Islander reports selectmen will decide at their meeting next Tuesday whether to hire the Maine Municipal Association to boost the number of applicants. The MMA helps with about a half-dozen town manager searches each year, charging a flat rate of $49-hundred-dollars for their services which doesn’t include advertising the position. Current town manager Don Lagrange is on medical leave and is scheduled to retire next June.
Mailbox Thefts
(Swanville) A Swanville man caught digging through mailboxes on Christmas morning last year has been given a deferred sentence. 20-year-old Randy Elwell pleaded guilty last week to 10 of the 38 charges against him for theft and burglary. WABI-TV reports Elwell must pay $31-hundred dollars in restitution, and if he stays out of trouble for a year-and-a-half he can plead guilty to lesser charges and two dozen current charges will be dropped. Elwell and a juvenile drove around and trolled mailboxes in Belfast, Swanville, Searsport and Union last December.
