Home Invasion Plea
(Belfast) – A Waldo County woman will serve 10-months of a 6-year prison term for a drunken home invasion in which she crawled into an elderly woman’s bed, literally scaring her to death. 37-year old Tara Shibles of Thorndike admitted to the home invasion in which 72-year old Joyce Wood of Burnham died of a stress induced heart attack after calling 9-1-1 and running outside her home. Shibles could have faced up to 30-years in prison. The Bangor Daily News reports Wood’s family members don’t believe the manslaughter sentence is long enough.
Protest Arrests
(Bangor) – Five protestors got a ride in a Bangor police van to the Penobscot County Jail after they refused to leave Senator Susan Collins’ office. They were upset that Collins had voted in favor of the President’s tax reform plan and staged a sit-in at her offices on Harlow Street in Bangor. A 6th protestor left the offices when ordered. Police tell Star 97-7 the five ranged in age from 33 to 66 and lived across Maine. They’re charged with criminal trespass.
Bitcoin Sentence
(Portland) – A federal judge in Portland has sentenced a Detroit Michigan man and his company for operating an unlicensed money-service business. 41-year old Sal Mansy bought and sold virtual currency called Bit-coin through a business but didn’t register with the federal treasury department as required by law. The US Attorney’s office tells Star 97-7 Mansy will spend a year and a day in prison and his business is on 3-years probation. A search of his home in Michigan found $118-thousand dollars in cash and bitcoin.
Stolen Guns
(Rockland) A mother and son are behind bars for allegedly stealing two rare antique guns from a friend’s home in Rockland. The gun owner didn’t know the firearms were missing until a state trooper contacted him. State police got a tip about the guns, valued at more than $20-thousand-dollars. They interviewed a pawn shop employee in Auburn who confirmed that 27-year-old Alexander Lane sold them the guns. Lane was accompanied by his 47-year-old mother Tara Bellavance. Police arrested Bellavance at her residence in Rome, Lane was taken into custody after a traffic stop. They had not yet recovered firearms.
Fatal Crash
(Mattawamkeag) – A 51-year old Medway man died after a weekend crash in Mattawamkeag. Police identify him as Steve Smith. A passing motorist discovered the single vehicle crash at about 8-o’clock Saturday night on the Medway Road. Investigators are still examining evidence from the crash scene.
Store Burglaries
(Eddington/Clifton) Deputies in Penobscot County are investigating burglaries at two stores during the weekend. Deputies tell WABI-TV someone broke into the Clifton Country Store around 2:30 Saturday morning and stole money and merchandise. Then around 4AM deputies responded to an alarm at the Tradewinds in Eddington. Investigators have asked the public to help with any information about the burglaries.
Standoff Arrest
(Chesterville) A 10-hour standoff in Chesterville ended peacefully with a Carthage man taken to the Franklin County Jail. WABI-TV reports 41-year-old Vance Billings was staying as a guest at a friend’s mobile home on Horseshoe Pond Road but later assaulted the homeowner. Police showed up around 7 Saturday night, but Billings refused to leave and had a pellet gun and crossbow with him, though police say he did not use them. Billings is charged with criminal trespassing, criminal mischief, and violating conditions of release.
Dispatcher Retires
(SW Harbor) A Southwest Harbor dispatcher has retired after 37 years on the job. The Mt Desert Islander reports Tremont native Ben Harper was honored Monday at the police station. And although his official retirement date was in June, Harper routinely drops by the police station, working unpaid, to offer advice and help train other dispatchers. One of Harper’s most notable experiences was being alone at the police station when a man wanted for murder showed up in the middle of the night; Harper kept him calm until the chief arrived. Harper also headed the Southwest Harbor-Tremont Ambulance Service for about 11 years.
No Shave Conclusion
(Ellsworth) Ellsworth Police have presented a check to Beth Wright Cancer Resource Center. During the gathering at the Moore Community Center, Chief Glenn Moshier says the No Shave November campaign accomplished its mission. The Ellsworth PD raised $13-hundred-85-dollars for the Beth Wright Cancer Resource Center.
Ugly Sweaters
(Ellsworth) The Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce is campaigning to get everyone in town to wear a hideous Christmas sweater on December 15th, designated National Ugly Sweater Day. The Chamber has submitted an application to the Guinness Book of World Records to be the largest gathering of people wearing Christmas Sweaters at multiple venues after convincing City Hall, many businesses and schools to participate. Chamber says they have not yet heard back about their application, but executive director Gretchen Wilson says Ellsworth plans to be the most spirited city in Maine that day regardless.
