Harrington Crash
(Harrington) – An accident on Route 1 in Harrington has reportedly injured several people and shut down the road. A state police dispatcher confirms to Star 97.7 they are diverting traffic around the scene and ambulances drove the injured to the hospital. The 9-1-1 call reporting the crash came in around 6-o’clock this morning.
Eastbrook deaths
(Eastbrook) – The Hancock County Town of Eastbrook has only a few hundred residents, and they’ve been hit hard emotionally in recent days with untimely deaths. The Cave Hill school principal’s husband, Greg Jordan is the latest – suffering a heart attack while hunting with his son. Last week 54-year old Trudy Pickard died in a car crash at the town’s community center. And chimney cleaning business owner Eddy Jordan passed away last week after a lengthy illness.
Hit and Run
(Brewer) – A hit and run crash in Brewer last evening knocked out power to part of South Main Street. Police say the Hyundai struck a utility pole around 5:30 last evening. Witnesses said there appeared to e a child in the back set, but officers say they don’t believe any children were in danger. They’ve not identified the driver, but have found the vehicle involved.
Ferry – Portland
(Portland) – The federal government says it plans to shut down its customs inspections operations in Portland because it doesn’t meet safety standards, and that could likely kill the ferry service between Maine and Nova Scotia. The City of Portland says it’ll cost up to $6-million dollars to make the safety improvements the Boarder Patrol requires, and it can’t afford to do that. The Cat ferry has run for a few years between Portland and Yarmouth Nova Scotia. There has been some talk that the Cat might prefer to return to Bar Harbor instead.
BHHT $200k
(Sedgwick) Blue Hill Heritage Trust, Maine Coast Heritage Trust and Island Heritage Trust are collaborating to purchase and conserve a special piece of property on Caterpillar Hill in Sedgwick. The group just received a $200-thousand-dollar award from the Land for Maine’s Future program, bringing their fundraising total to over a half million dollars. BHHT executive director Hans Carlson says they’ll continue raising money beyond the purchase price to ensure funding for maintenance of the property with the iconic view across Penobscot Bay and the islands.
Fatal Crash
(Greene) An SUV struck a funeral home van transporting a body back to its facility in Winthrop from behind, killing the driver. State police say the impact hurled the van several hundred feet off the road and down an embankment before hitting trees. Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home employee, 59-year-old Richard Charest of Winthrop died at the scene on Route 202 in Greene Monday evening. The Sabattus man who rear-ended the van did not require medical attention.
Jimmy Card Dies
(Ellsworth) A well-known member of the Ellsworth community has lost his battle with cancer. Jimmy Card owned Card Enterprises and was a graduate of Ellsworth high school. He spent years as a volunteer coach for the Down East Family YMCA. Youth sports director Shane Lowell says Card will be missed by the Y-family. Jim Card passed away Monday evening. Tuesday would have been his 46th birthday.
Robbery Arrest
(Bangor) – Police in Bangor say a 25-year old man accused of holding up a Big Apple convenience store earlier this month showed up with illegal drugs at the police station yesterday. David Carr allegedly demanded money from a clerk at the store on State Street then ran up Grove Street. He ran out of gas on Interstate 95 and a state trooper who assisted him said Carr made suspicious statements. Bangor police later searched his home and arrested him yesterday after he showed up to the police station with narcotics.
Ranked Choice
(Augusta) Supporters of ranked-choice voting are seeking enough signatures for a vote to stop a legislative delay and allow the system for the June primary elections. If they succeed, then the state would move forward with a dual-election system with ranked-choice voting for primaries and federal races. The proposed system lets voters rank candidates in order of preference and ensures that the winning candidate achieves a majority.
