Power Outages
(Bangor) – Just under 60-thousand Emera Maine customers spent the night without electricity. That’s an improvement from the height of yesterday’s wind storm where more than 80-thousand customers lost electricity. Central Maine Power reports 344-thousand outages overnight. Emera Maine spokesman Bob Potts tells Star 97-7 customers have kept operators busy asking when the power will come back on. Potts says it may be a while. Potts said they’re concentrating on transmission lines and have most of those up and running and now crews will work on distribution lines. He said they restored about 20-thousand homes overnight. Early this morning about 60-thousand Emera customers awaited power restoration. Central Maine Power said its outages totaled more than 344-thousand.
Manslaughter Suspect dies
(Ellsworth) – A Virginia man accused of manslaughter when his vehicle slammed into a Bar Harbor restaurant and killed a woman in the parking lot has died. The Bangor Daily News reports 36-year old Justin Shell died in Virginia and the cause is under investigation. Shell said he suffered a seizure when his car went off Route 3 last month and hit 76-year old Connie Birkenmeier, killing her in the parking lot at the Chart Room Restaurant. He said he was sleep deprived, but Bar Harbor police found drugs in his vehicle.
OUI – Kids
(Belfast) – A 58-year old West Rockport man faces OUI charges and police in Belfast say there were children in the vehicle he was operating. The Pen Bay Pilot reports a Waldo County Deputy stopped Lorenzo Cruz in Belfast last week after a motorist reported it was weaving all over Route 1. In addition to OUI, Cruz is charged with endangering the welfare of children. He’s got a court date in December.
Teal Pumpkin
(Local/Nat’l) Teal pumpkins are popping up outside of homes across the country. It’s part of a nationwide campaign to bring awareness to kids with food allergies by encouraging people to hand out non-food items on Halloween. Food Allergy Research and Education spokeswoman Nancy Gregory says there is a wealth of information on their website.
Fatal Fire
(Whitneyville) – State investigators say a Whitneyville fisherman’s death was no accident. State Police spokesman Steve McCausland reports to Star 97-7 they’ve classified 48-year old Wayne Foss’s death as a homicide. State fire investigators discovered his remains Saturday inside his Middle Street mobile home. Neighbors reported the trailer ablaze at about 2-o’clock in the morning. An autopsy confirmed Foss’s identification but they’ve not yet said how he died.
Trunk-or-Treat
(Ellsworth) Motorists commuting through Ellsworth late this afternoon are reminded that the Main Street intersection at the upper light will be closed for about 10 minutes as Trick-or-Treaters parade in their Halloween costumes. Chief Glenn Moshier says a section of Main Street will be closed a bit longer while the parade continues down onto Franklin Street and into the city hall parking lot for Trunk or Treat. Down East Family YMCA spokesperson Shauna Esposito-Caldwell says parade line-up starts at 5:15 across from Angelo’s Pizza.
