Bucksport Shootings
(Bucksport) – Police say the public is not in danger after a double shooting in Bucksport last night. It happened around 8:30 at a parking lot near Wight’s Apple Orchard. State Police spokesman Steve McCausland confirms two people suffered gunshot wounds and an ambulance rushed them to Eastern Maine Medical Center. The alleged shooter is in custody. Authorities have not released any other information.
Drug Pleas
(Bangor) – Four Bangor area drug dealers await sentencing after pleading guilty to their roles in a cocaine and heroin distribution ring that ran for nearly two years before drug agents shut it down. The US Attorney’s office reports to Star 97-7 that 37-year old Yanel Greene of Bangor would have couriers bring him crack, heroin and oxycodone pills from out of state and the other three would distribute the drugs. A Bronx, NY man has already been convicted of supplying the drugs and is serving 18-years in prison.
China Crash
(China) – A mess on Route 3 in China, just outside Augusta, as an accident closed the road for about 4-hours yesterday. A truck carrying plywood swerved into a van that had slowed to make a left hand turn. Firefighters had to cut 49-year old Pamela Page of Palermo from the wrecked van. The truck driver was uninjured. Page was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland. It took several hours to clean up the spilled plywood and diesel fuel that leaked out.
Appleton Fire
(Appleton) – Fire consumed an Appleton home that once had served the town as a general store in the 1800s. Firefighters from several communities responded shortly after 5:30 yesterday morning to the vacant building on the Camden Road. Heavy rains kept sparks from spreading to nearby homes. The Pen Bay Pilot reports it took firefighters about 5-hours to extinguish the flames. The fire marshal’s office will search for a cause.
Citizen Initiatives-Langley
(Maine) The Maine legislature voted Monday to put ranked-choice voting on hold until at least 2021. Last July legislative leaders and Governor LePage negotiated a budget that repealed a special tax on Mainers with an annual income exceeding $200-thousand-dollars to fund education. Trying to legalize recreational marijuana is also on unsteady ground. Senator Brian Langley says citizen initiatives are time consuming.
Balcer-Court
(Augusta) Court testimony reveals that a Maine teenager charged with killing his parents told a police dispatcher he “snapped” on the night of the stabbings. 18-year-old Andrew Balcer was in an Augusta courtroom Monday where his dramatic 12-minute conversation with the dispatcher last year was played for a judge. Balcer allegedly stabbed his mother first in her bedroom, then his father in the kitchen, and also told the dispatcher he killed the family dog because it was barking. Balcer was 17 then. If found guilty of murder as a juvenile, Balcer could be confined to a juvenile facility until age 21. If convicted as an adult he’d face between 25 years and life in prison.
Volunteer Angels Training
(Ellsworth) The Ellsworth police department’s Project Hope is looking for volunteer angels. Project Hope allows anyone in the area suffering from addiction to come to the Ellsworth PD and ask for help. Detective Dotty Small says a training at Ellsworth City Hall today will outline the roles of volunteers. The volunteer angels training, put on by Healthy Acadia, is this afternoon from 4 to 5:30 at Ellsworth City Hall.
Burglary-Teens
(Ellsworth) Three teens are charged with burglary, theft and vandalism after breaking in to a vacant home in Ellsworth. Lt Harold Page tells Star 97-7 a neighbor called police after observing the 3 boys outside the home then seeing lights on inside. Police responded to the Central Street home a little after 6 Monday night and arrested the trio, who stole a piece of jewelry and silverware. The boys are from Bar Harbor, Pembroke and Lamoine, and were later released to their parents.
Citgo Sign
(MDI) The founder of the MDI Marathon who’s iconic Citgo sign went missing during this month’s race received an unexpected package in the mail. Gary Allen says it was not one of his two stolen Citgo signs, but a woman named Lynn from South Carolina has been following the story and mailed him a replacement. Allen says her kindness and generosity are very touching.
Dog Decision
(Winslow) Maine’s high court has upheld a ruling that two dogs should be euthanized for killing a Boston terrier and injuring its owner. The Maine Supreme Judicial Court issued a brief decision Tuesday denying an appeal by Danielle Jones, the owner of the dogs. The Kennebec Journal reports that the two pit bulls escaped their fenced-in backyard and attacked the terrier last year.
Road Construction
(Ellsworth) Early commuters are asked to avoid a section of Main Street in downtown Ellsworth that’ll be under construction. The plan is to mill, smooth and repave the rough and wavy section of Main Street located between Hancock and State Streets. Weather permitting the construction is scheduled for 5 to 7 AM this morning and tomorrow. A combination of one-way traffic and detours will allow traffic to keep moving, but city officials warn it’ll be slow goin’ so please seek an alternate route. Again that’s 5 to 7AM only.
