Ellsworth Accident
(Ellsworth) – Police in Ellsworth have yet to release names of two elderly men involved in a pedestrian accident on the Union River bridge downtown. It happened during rush hour Friday afternoon, snarling traffic city wide as police reconstructed the crash. Witnesses tell Star 97.7 the victim flew several feet through the air when a car turning left onto the bridge hit him. The victim is 78-years old and reportedly suffered head injuries. The car driver is 75-years old.
Fire Danger
(Ellsworth) – Numerous wild land fires during the weekend as the fire danger remained high throughout the weekend. Another day of dry weather is expected to keep firefighters on edge before rain moves in later this week. In Ellsworth, firefighters from numerous communities scrambled to contain a woods fire on North Street, just beyond a gravel pit. That call came in around 4:45 yesterday afternoon. Fires also reported in Waltham, Marshfield, Belfast and Prospect this weekend scorched dozens of acres.
Buildings torn down
(Bar Harbor) – Bar Harbor has a couple of holes along its streets where buildings once stood. The Mt. Desert Islander reports owners tore down the former Nakorn Thai restaurant on Cottage Street and a building that went with the Ledgelawn Inn on Mt. Desert Street. The former Inn building will make way for a 31-room bed and breakfast. The Cottage Street lot is for sale for a million and a half dollars.
Judge Nominations Withdrawn
(Augusta) – Without explanation Governor Paul LePage has withdrawn five names offered for judge reappointments. Three of the withdrawn nominees routinely work cases in Hancock County, including superior court judges Robert Murray and Ann Murray of Bangor, and District Court Judge Bruce Jordan of Veazie. The Governor is out of the country today and his office offered no explanation yesterday.
Bald Eagle Shot
(Augusta) – Game wardens are seeking information on who shot a bald eagle north of Baxter State Park sometime earlier this month. Warden Service spokesman John McDonald tells Star 97-7 the badly wounded juvenile eagle was discovered on the 13th and had to be euthanized. The bird was discovered on the Whitehorse Road and wardens believe it was hit with shotgun pellets sometime between October 11th and 13th. A $25-hundred dollar reward was posted for information.
Drug Take-Back
(Ellsworth) This Saturday is the last Drug Take-Back event for 2017. The Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office host the event twice a year. Sheriff Scott Kane says you don’t need to do any special preparation before bringing your unused prescriptions or expired medication to the Chamber. Kane says the only things they cannot accept are liquids or needles. The Drug Take-Back event is at the Ellsworth Chamber from 9 ’til 1 on Saturday.
