Sex Offender Ruling
(Ellsworth) – A former pastor on Mt. Desert Island will remain on probation but his sex offender treatment will get more strict provisions. The Mt. Desert Islander reports a judge denied a state request to revoke Wayne Buchanan’s probation and send him to jail. The request followed discovery of an internet search for rubbin butts on Buchanan’s computer. Buchanan’s wife said she entered the Google search, as it’s a restaurant in New Hampshire. Buchanan is on probation and under treatment after he was caught with child porn on his computer.
Firearm Plea
(Portland) – A Knox County man faces up to 10-years in prison and a quarter million dollar fine after he admitted he had a gun when he was not supposed to. The US Attorney’s office tells Star 97-7 that 61-year old Michael Brewer of Union entered the guilty plea yesterday. Brewer who was convicted of attempted murder, burglary and OUI was barred from possessing any guns. He led deputies on a high speed chase last May and had a pistol in the car.
Marsh Obit
(Bangor) – A former Bangor TV News anchor has died after a battle with breast cancer. Michelle Marsh worked at WABI-TV in the 1970s before moving on to New York City where she anchored the news with two major TV stations. She was 63-years old.
Sanford Fire
(Sanford) – A dropped cigarette may have ignited a huge blaze in Sanford that damaged six buildings and injured four people yesterday. The fire marshal’s office will return to the scene today to try to pinpoint the origin and cause. Firefighters from at least 25-departments responded to Island Avenue yesterday afternoon. They demolished two buildings last night. Among the injuries at the scene was one person who suffered a heart attack. The Red Cross is helping at least two families. Squatters occupied some of the destroyed buildings.
Fire Safety
(Ellsworth) As part of National Fire Prevention Month the Ellsworth fire department will host its’ annual open house tomorrow. Deputy fire chief Gary Saunders says kids will learn fire safety with fun activities, but there are also activities for the adults. The open house is from 10am ’til 2pm tomorrow.
10 Person Drug Bust
(Dixfield) Maine drug agents arrested 10 people this week in connection with a drug ring operating out of Dixfield. The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency says the group smuggled more than 50 grams of heroin and 28 grams of cocaine base into Maine weekly before drug agents shut them down. Those arrested include 2 brothers from Massachusetts and Maine residents from Dixfield, Mexico, Hanover, Lewiston, Jay and Peru. The arrests follow indictments last week by the Oxford County Grand Jury, one of whom is a former substitute teacher at Mountain Valley Middle School.
Our Town
(Ellsworth) Live, local theater returns to The Grand beginning this evening. Executive director Nick Turner tells Star 97-7 some familiar faces take the stage during the production of Our Town. The debut is tonight at 7 and it runs throughout this weekend and next weekend.
Free Pet Adoptions
(Bangor) If you’ve recently considered adopting a pet, the Bangor Humane Society is waiving all adoption fees tomorrow. The Subaru Loves Pets Adoption Event is made possible by a grant from Quirk Subaru and the ASPCA. All animals at the Bangor Humane Society are spayed or neutered prior to adoption. The event is from 10am ’til 6pm at their facility on Mount Hope Avenue. You can also get an engraved dog tag by making a donation.
Pot Law
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) – Maine’s governor is proposing that the state simply delay recreational marijuana sales instead of passing a legislative re-write of the voter-approved marijuana law. The Maine Legislature is set to return Monday to consider a re-write offered by a legislative committee handling marijuana implementation. Advocacy group Legalize Maine said the committee’s bill would make it harder to set up marijuana businesses
King – Democrats
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) – Maine Sen. Angus King says he’s not interested in a potential request that he join the Democratic Party. King is an independent who caucuses with the Democrats. A Democratic National Committee member is sponsoring a resolution calling for King and fellow independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont to join the party.
