Lamoine – Gravel Hearing
(Lamoine) – A Hancock based contractor that wants to expand a gravel mining operation in Lamoine goes before the public tonight with its proposal after the town agreed to re-hear the plan that was rejected a few years ago. Harold MacQuinn, Incorporated claimed bias on the part of a couple of Planning Board members that voted to deny the gravel pit expansion. Two of those members have retired and the third has recused himself from the latest hearing. Voters passed an ordinance change that essentially bans new pits in town, but the plan tonight will decide the matter based on regulations in effect at the time of original application.
Car in the Drink
(Tremont) – An elderly New York couple is OK after they drove their car off a boat ramp and into Bass Harbor last evening. The fire department and a sheriff’s deputy on patrol nearby managed to get 72-year old John Cocks and his wife out of their 2017 Audi. The Mt. Desert Islander reports they were headed to Somesville but took a wrong turn and ended up steering the car onto the boat ramp in Bernard. Lt. Chris Thornton of the Sheriff’s Department said poor visibility due to fog was a factor.
Holden Pole Crash
(Holden) – Police shut down Route 46 in Holden for several hours last evening after a truck clipped a utility pole, bringing wires down into the road. WABI-TV reports a box truck driver drifted off the cutoff between Route 9 and Route 1-A at about 5-o’clock. Emergency crews diverted traffic through Brewer instead while utility crews replaced the broken pole and restrung the downed wires.
MCMH Staff
(Ellsworth) – At least 7-doctors have left Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in recent weeks as the hospital works under new ownership. Maine Public reports the hospital which is now run by Eastern Maine Health Systems is struggling to keep the emergency room staffed to adequate levels. Eastern Maine took over in 2015 and named John Ronan as president last year. Hospital chair Debra Ehrlenbach says the partnership with EMHS will position the local hospital for success in the ever changing health care world.
Art of Ellsworth
(Ellsworth) Ellsworth will become a hub for creative minds and those who appreciate them during next month’s Art of Ellsworth-Maine Craft Weekend. Heart of Ellsworth executive director Cara Romano says the event is a local idea, yet will coincide with the Maine Crafts Association’s statewide celebration. Events will run October 11th thru the 15th.
Woman Found
(Garland) Game wardens found a missing Garland woman just shy of 24-hours after she set out on a hike. 63-year-old April Estabrooke-Doore left home around 3 o’clock Monday afternoon for a short trip on local trails in the Garland area, but when she didn’t return home Tuesday morning her boyfriend reported her missing. Doore did not have a cell phone and was driving a Polaris Ranger that got stuck. Wardens found her around Noon yesterday in good health.
Moped Fatal
(Alfred) State police say an 81-year-old Lebanon man died Monday afternoon when his moped was struck by a car on route 202 in Alfred. Russell Faxon died at the scene. The driver of the car, 65-year-old Laura Melisi of Action, was attempting to turn left into a business. Troopers say Faxon was following a large box truck when the woman turned left after the truck passed and she did not see the scooter. She and a passenger were not injured. Faxon wasn’t wearing a helmet.
Bridge Crash Update
(Prospect) The Waldo County Sheriff’s Office has released the names of the 5 people injured in a crash Saturday in Prospect. 20-year-old Michael Soteres failed to negotiate a left-hand turn coming off the Penobscot Narrows Bridge and crashed into the cliffs. The injured passengers were 18-year-old Joshua Larrabee of Prospect, 20-year-old Everett Dalton of Bucksport, 18-year-old Zachary Turcotte of Winterport, and 20-year-old Joseph French of Ellsworth. After being medically cleared police arrested French for violating his probation. The accident remains under investigation; alcohol and speed are considered possible factors in the crash.
Plankton
(Portland) The Maine Department of Marine Resources says it’s monitoring a large, unusual bloom of phytoplankton in the area of Casco Bay. The department says the bloom is not a threat to human health, unlike other toxic blooms it typically monitors. The species is called Karenia mikimotoi and it can have harmful effects on fish, shellfish and other marine life.
LePage on Illegals
(Augusta) Maine’s Republican governor has sent a letter to county sheriffs directing them to cooperate with federal immigration officials. In the letter Governor Paul LePage said Maine law requires sheriffs to obey his law enforcement orders. Maine’s constitution says a governor can remove a sheriff following a “complaint, due notice and hearing.” County Sheriff Kevin Joyce said he’d reject requests to hold prisoners in jail beyond their scheduled release.
