Missing Mom & Kids
(Old Town) – A Bangor woman reported missing yesterday is dead, but her two children survived a car crash on Interstate 95 near Old Town. State Police report a truck driver spotted the wrecked car in thick woods near mile marker 197. Liza Parker was supposed to meet her former husband in Howland. Her two little children survived the crash – they were strapped in car seats and suffered minor injuries. State Police said Parker’s car crossed the median and rolled over several times before ending up in the woods.
ATV Fatal
(Wallagrass) – An elderly Aroostook County man has died after an ATV crash in his hometown. The Maine Warden Service reports to Star 97-7 that 92-year old Gerard Belanger of Wallagrass was hauling logs with an ATV and a trailer when the vehicle became unstable and crashed. The mishap threw the man from the ATV. His son found him when Belanger did not return to the wood cutting scene. Game Wardens continue to investigate the crash.
Church-Emergency Shelter
(Ellsworth) This week’s theme for National Preparedness Month is “get involved, be part of something larger,” and that’s exactly what one local church is doing. Assembly of God on Beechland Road in Ellsworth is building an addition intended as an emergency shelter. Lead pastor Burt Lowry says the church recognized the need for the shelter following the Ice Storm of ’98. The church helped fund the shelter from member donations and a loan. Lowry says volunteers from Mission America Placement Service have helped with construction.
Jumbo Jackpot
(Ellsworth) Picture-perfect weather highlighted last weekend’s Autumn Gold event in Ellsworth. The Chamber of Commerce spent weeks selling tickets for the Jumbo Jackpot, and executive director Gretchen Wilson says they drew the winning names yesterday.
Wrong Way Arrest
(Saco) Police arrested a Hollis woman who drove the wrong way on the Maine Turnpike early Monday morning and crashed. State police say 21-year-old Baylee Lunt is charged with Operating Under the Influence. Lunt drove her car north in the southbound lane in Saco when she crashed into several parked construction vehicles in a lane that was closed to traffic. No workers were present during the 12:30 AM crash. Lunt received treatment for minor injuries .
Young Philanthropist
(Machias) A young philanthropist who attends Jonesport Elementary School received praise for her contribution to a local hospital. 8-year-old Mia Mills earned money lobster fishing with her dad and donated the money to the new Emergency Department at Down East Community Hospital in Machias. The 4th grader has volunteered at animal shelters, assisted with beach and park clean-ups, and participated in anti-bullying awareness events. In Augusta she received a Presidential Service Award for her good deeds.
Firearms Sentencing
(Berwick) A federal court judge sentenced a Berwick man convicted for being a felon in possession of a firearm to 7-years in prison. Court documents say in May last year 29-year-old Adam Brake burglarized 8 locations in the Berwick area then traded stolen items for heroin. Police recovered items from 6 of the burglaries including 9 guns. Brake pleaded guilty in June.
Save the Whales
(Portland) Researchers with the federal government and the New England Aquarium say they’ve developed a new model to provide better estimates about the North Atlantic right whale population, and the news isn’t good. The agency says the analysis shows the probability this endangered species has declined since 2010 is nearly 100 percent.
