Narrows Bridge Crash
(Prospect) – A speeding Mercedes didn’t make the left hand turn at the Prospect end of the Penobscot Narrows Bridge early Saturday morning. Five people were inside, four of them remain in the hospital this morning. The Waldo County Sheriff’s Department tells Star 97-7 two of the victims flew by rescue helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center, two others by ambulance. The fifth person was treated and released from the Belfast hospital. Speed and alcohol are factors according to investigators who did not release names during the weekend.
Tremont – Manager Search
(Tremont) – Selectmen in Tremont begin their search for a new town manager tonight. The issue sits alone on the agenda as the town meets with Maine Municipal Association to look for a replacement for Dana Reed who retires in December. Reed has held the post for about 3-years, coming to Tremont after he agreed to leave the town manager’s post in Bar Harbor where he spent 28-years.
Deputies Cleared
(Augusta) – Two deputies who shot an armed killer to death had every right to open fire. That’s the conclusion of Maine’s Attorney General. Cumberland County deputies Andrew Feeney and Derek Brill shot 59-year old Norman Strobel to death last November in Naples. The two had been searching for Strobel after a series of domestic violence and protection order violation incidents. Strobel had threatened to kill a former partner and shot and killed a housemate with whom he’d spent jail time. The deputies say Strobel refused to put down a gun, and when he point it at them, they fired.
Burton Trial
(Bangor) – A Parkman man who spent more than two months hiding from police in the woods of Piscataquis County, goes on trial starting today for murder. Robert Burton is accused of killing his former girlfriend, Stephanie Gebo back in 2015. After the shooting, Burton fled into the woods, breaking into cabins to steal food and clothing while authorities searched for him. He surrendered in August 2015, making it the longest manhunt in Maine history.
Hope Man Missing
(Rockland) – A 23-year old man from Hope remains missing with police asking the public for help to find him. Avery Smith’s family last saw him Saturday evening. His car turned up in Cape Elizabeth, but he’s nowhere to be seen. Smith has ties to Rockland, Cape Elizabeth and Peaks Island. His family described him as despondent.

(Maine) It’s the last week of National Preparedness Month. Maine Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Susan Faloon says as week four begins it’s not too late to start a preparedness plan. Nomination Papers
(Ellsworth) – Four people will vie for city councilor in Ellsworth in November. City Clerk Heidi Grindle tells Star 97-7 that Dale Hamilton and Gene Lyons will challenge incumbents John Moore and John Phillips for the council seats. The deadline to submit nomination papers was Friday. Two candidates will appear on the ballot for library trustee, while only one candidate is running for school board with two seats open.
Murder Charges
(Machias) – A grand jury says there’s enough evidence to take a New York couple to trial for killing a woman and dumping her body in Cherryfield. The panel returned murder indictments against 19-year old Quaneysha Greely and 37-year old Carine Reeves. Police say he shot 55-year old Sally Shaw in the head and the two left her body along Route 193 last July. They allegedly crashed her rented car at the intersection of Route 9 and hitched a ride to Bangor before fleeing the state. Reeves remains in New York where he faces other charges. Greely remains in jail in Maine.
Texting Expulsion
(Presque Isle) A Presque Isle teen has been expelled for allegedly texting about 20 female students and threatening to spread rumors if they didn’t send him explicit photos. The Bangor Daily News reports the MSAD 1 school board voted Wednesday to expel the 15-year-old male student for attempting to extort and blackmail girls from Presque Isle High School and possibly other area schools. Police were alerted to the sexting solicit when a victim told a school social worker what was happening, who then contacted police.
Theft Arrest
(Bangor) A Bangor resident suspected someone was stealing packages off his porch and set up a camera to catch the thief taking dummy packages. 28-year-old Veronica Smith of Bangor was allegedly caught in the act. Detectives searched her home last Thursday and found several stolen items. She’s charged with Theft and Receiving Stolen Property. Bangor police say if any local residents haven’t received packages that were supposed to be delivered to their homes within the last few months, they want to hear from you.
Robbery Conspiracy Sentencing
(Lewiston) A Lewiston man will spend more than 15 years in prison for interstate robbery conspiracy and using a firearm during a crime of violence. 27-year-old Kourtney Williams was convicted by a jury last September and was sentenced Friday. Trial evidence revealed that in August 2014 Williams and others broke into a home in Minot intending to steal drugs and money from the occupants. Williams used a pistol to repeatedly threaten and assault the victims.
