Jax Mice
(Bar Harbor) – The Jackson Laboratory says a Chinese University is violating terms of a contract by breeding and reselling mice developed by the lab. Lawyers filed a federal lawsuit against Nanjing University, claiming it bred and sold two strains of genetically modified mice originally developed by the Bar Harbor based research lab. Nanjing says it has removed the questioned mice from its offerings.
Lucerne/Dedham
(Lucerne) – The village of Lucerne is talking about dissolving its corporation and becoming part of the Town of Dedham. The issue is property taxes. The Ellsworth American reports Lucerne taxes its residents at a higher rate and most of the money goes for the Dedham school department and fire department. Lucerne has a fixed boundary and its own government system in place. If it officially merges with Dedham, that governmental structure would disappear, and the tax rate in Dedham would be the same for the village area as the rest of town.
Osborn Fire Department
(Osborn) – The tiny Hancock County town of Osborn now officially has a defined fire department, though it only has 5-members. The Ellsworth American reports town fathers defined the fire department in an new ordinance. The fire department had disbanded when it dwindled to two members over the summer. Nine voters showed up for a special town meeting this week to approve the new fire department ordinance. The town had contemplated contracting for fire protection services from neighboring Aurora.
Flood Cars
(Augusta) Maine’s Attorney General and Secretary of State urge caution about buying flood damaged cars, ruined by hurricanes in Texas and Florida. Special assistant to the Attorney General Andy Roth-Wells says it’s best to review a vehicle’s history online before buying it because the damage may not be visibly apparent. There is a charge for using: Vehicle History dot Gov, but Roth-Wells says it’s better than unknowingly buying a damaged car.
Autumn Gold
(Ellsworth) You have until Noon today to buy advanced tickets at the Ellsworth Chamber of Commerce and save 10-bucks on admission to the Autumn Gold Beer and Wine Tasting. Executive director Gretchen Wilson says after 12 o’clock this afternoon the cost goes up to $30 and you can buy tickets at the tasting tent. The ReMax hot air balloon will also be at the waterfront offering free rides from 5 to 7 tonight, weather permitting.
Kitten & Puppy Preview
(Ellsworth) The Ark Animal Shelter out of Cherryfield will bring some furry friends to Ellsworth for Autumn Gold weekend. The Kitten and Puppy Preview is tomorrow from 11 ’til 2 at Maine Pet and Aquarium. Ark executive director Vincent Ewald tells Star 97-7 there will be special visitors from far away. Ewald says they will feature five, 10-week-old Schnauzer-mix puppies and a stray from Harvey.
Cruise Ship
(Bucksport) – Bucksport’s town manager says the town should be able to handle a surprise tourist influx today. A cruise ship with 300-passengers gave notice it was tying up to the AIM dock last night. Town Manager Susan Lessard said the ship had little choice – the town dock is too small and the currents in the harbor are too strong for the big ship. Passengers were supposed to come ashore this morning and the ship will depart at 2-o’clock this afternoon.
Assault
(Rockland) A Rockland man is held at the Knox County Jail for allegedly assaulting a woman Monday night, causing a broken rib and internal injuries. Village Soup-dot-Com reports 30-year-old James Kennedy was witnessed punching and kicking a woman lying in the road on Orange Street. A man with a baseball bat came out of a nearby home to confront Kennedy, who charged at him. He hit Kennedy in the leg with the bat before Kennedy and the victim fled. Rockland police and Knox County deputies caught up with Kennedy. He’s charged with aggravated assault, assault, criminal mischief, obstructing the report of a crime, and terrorizing.
Kids-Terrorizing Charges
(Thorndike) Two juveniles face charges after two separate incidents that placed the Mount View school complex in Thorndike on lockdown. The Waldo County Sheriff’s Department worked with staff at RSU 3 to determine the origin of both threatening notes found last week. The first occurred last Thursday – a juvenile male is charged with terrorizing and held at a detention facility pending future court action. A girl allegedly wrote a second threatening note on Friday.
Alleged Killer’s Records Public
(Ayer, MA) A judge has ruled that some court records in the case of a Rockland man charged with killing his mother, grandparents and their caretaker in a Massachusetts home will be made public. A judge impounded the records after Orion Krause of Rockport was arraigned on last week in the September 8th killings in Groton Massachusetts. But a different judge on Wednesday rescinded the impoundment order.
Fort Knox Celebration
(Prospect) Friends of Fort Knox celebrates 25 years of success with a series of events tomorrow. Starting at 1 o’clock there’s a Masonry Tour around the fort and also the Major Project Achievements Tour. Saint Andrews bagpipers will entertain, along with roaming clowns and Medieval characters. East Coast Ghost Trackers will display their equipment and talk about sightings at the fort. Attendees can also expect to see pirates and hear cannon fire each hour.
Ayla Reynolds
(Portland) Maine State Police say they have uncovered no evidence that a toddler missing since 2011 is still alive despite the more than 1,000 leads they’ve received. The mother of Ayla Reynolds asked during a court hearing in Portland that her daughter be declared dead. A declaration would allow a wrongful-death lawsuit against Ayla’s father, Justin DiPietro, with whom Ayla was staying with when she disappeared at 20-months old.
Seals Released
(New England) Three seal pups that were apparently abandoned by their parents after birth have been released into the waters off Rhode Island. Officials at Connecticut’s Mystic Aquarium say the three harbor seals named Aster, Azalea and Ivy were released Thursday morning in Charlestown, Rhode Island. One of the seals was found in Rhode Island and the other two were found in Maine. The aquarium says they are now healthy enough to survive on their own.
