Pedestrian Killed
(Bar Harbor) – Horror at lunch time for a Bar Harbor restaurant yesterday as a pickup truck careened into the parking lot, hitting parked cars and killing a woman standing in the lot. Police tell Star 97.7 they charged 36-year old Justin Shell of Virginia with manslaughter and aggravated driving to endanger. Dead is 76-year old Connie Birkenmeier of Bar Harbor who was in the Chart Room’s parking lot when Shell’s truck came barreling in. The crash closed Route 3 in Hull’s Cove for several hours yesterday.
Python Found
(Camden) – Police pulled a python snake out of a Camden garden and took it to an animal shelter in Knox County yesterday. The Pen Bay Pilot reports an Eaton Street woman called 9-1-1 to report the snake was curled up and asleep in her garden. Two officers and the police chief responded. Chief Randy Gagne picked up the snake, gently put into a pillow case, and officers took it to an animal shelter in Thomaston.
Fall Foliage
(Maine) Maine’s foliage experts say today’s the official kick-off to fall. Foliage spokesperson Gale Ross says the leaves typically peak in color from north to south, and in her experience everything seems to be right on time. Maine Foliage dot Com begins posting the weekly foliage report today and will update it every Wednesday.
Green Plan
(Ellsworth) A public forum this evening in Ellsworth will address how to maximize green space within the community. The City council’s Parks Subcommittee wants input on how to develop additional green space, identify formal and informal community green space, and pinpoint what green spaces or habitats may be threatened. The Ellsworth Green Plan steering committee hosts the forum in the Ellsworth City Hall Auditorium tonight at 7.
Recovery Month
(Local) It’s week 2 of National Recovery Month. Healthy Acadia spokeswoman Denise Black says recovery is possible, each life matters, and a community can make a difference. This Friday, September 15th is the Walk for Recovery and Candlelight Vigil at the Machias Bay Area Chamber of Commerce. Lineup begins a few minutes before the walk starts at 6pm.
Park St Playground
(Bar Harbor) About 70 volunteers gathered at the Park Street playground in Bar Harbor last Saturday morning to install new equipment. The playground’s grand opening is scheduled for this Saturday the 16th, but Rotarian Jenna Horton Boucher [BOO shay] tells Star 97-7 that volunteers are still needed this week to help with the final steps. To volunteer to help at the Park Street playground contact the Bar Harbor Rotary Club at their website or on Facebook.
Search for Missing Woman
(Medford) The Maine Warden Service is asking for volunteers to help search for a Medford woman who vanished last fall. A family friend reported 71-year-old Diane Esteys missing in early November after not seeing her for several days. The Warden Service says 100 volunteers are needed to search for Esteys this Sunday. If interested you must be physically fit, have proper clothing, and be 18 or older. The Maine Warden Service office in Greenville is coordinating the search.
Innocent Plea
(Jay) A Jay man charged with beating his girlfriend to death pleaded innocent yesterday. WABI-TV reports a judge ordered 56-year old James Sweeney held without bail until after a hearing. He’s accused of hitting 51-year old Wendy Douglass with a bat while she was lying in bed at their home in July. Court records say Sweeney thought Douglass was going to leave him. He brought a note to police after Douglass’s death that read “I’m going to jail ’cause I hurt my girlfriend.”
OUI Arrest
(Tremont) A Lamoine man faces charges after he was found unresponsive behind the wheel of his vehicle. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department reports on Sunday they got a call to check on a man in his car at Hansen’s Landing store in Tremont. After further investigation 27-year-old Gage Gilley was arrested and charged with Operating Under the Influence of Drugs or Alcohol and Unlawful Possession of Scheduled Drugs. He made bail later that evening.
Suspect Sought
(Dedham) State police are still looking for a Franklin man who was stopped by troopers conducting a speed enforcement detail last week and fled after giving police a false name. Public safety department spokesman Steve McCausland tells Star 97-7 that 28-year-old George Pickard is still unaccounted for. Pickard’s SUV was stopped on Route 1A in Dedham last Tuesday. He allegedly gave police a false name and date of birth, then fled from his vehicle into the woods. A K9 brought in to track Pickard was unsuccessful in finding him. Pickard has 2 outstanding warrants and a revoked license. Anyone who knows his whereabouts is asked to call Bangor RCC.
