Ellsworth Fire
(Ellsworth) – Firefighters from four Hancock County towns responded to the Red Bridge Road in Ellsworth Sunday and got two women to safety so that ambulance crews could transport them to the hospital for smoke inhalation treatment. The State Fire Marshal’s office will look over the home to confirm the fire’s cause. The 9-1-1 call came in at about 9:45 yesterday morning, sending Ellsworth, Lamoine, Hancock and Trenton to the scene. Firefighters pulled a dog from the burning building, but could not revive it.
Credit Card Fraud Sentence
(Bangor) – A man who used fake credit cards with real numbers on their magnetic strips will spend a year and a half in prison and another 3-years on supervised release. Roberto Lueje-Rodriguez of Hialeah Florida worked with another man and ran up more than $30-thousand dollars in charges in numerous Maine and New Hampshire counties, including Hancock, Penobscot and Knox. The cards bore the name of David Cuan, but the card info contained account information of others. The other man was sentenced earlier this year to 3-and-a-half years in prison.
Power Outage
(Blue Hill) – Linemen from Emera Maine spent part of last evening in bucket trucks fixing broken power cables. High Winds that hit in the Blue Hill and Brooklin area knocked power out to more than 33-hundred homes at the height of the storm. By early this morning all but two customers had their power back on. Downed trees are blamed for the outages.
Red Pine Die-off
(Mt. Desert) – Most of the red pine trees on Mount Desert Island are quickly dying. The Mt. Desert Islander says a microscopic insect called red scale is to blame, and it’s spreading quickly around the island. The good news is that relatively few red pines stands exist on the island. National Park Service botanists says people should not bring in plants from out of state because that can bring in diseases like red scale.
Nat’l Preparedness Month
(Maine) September is National Preparedness Month. Maine Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Susan Faloon says her organization is joining the efforts of FEMA and millions of Americans across the country to prepare for emergencies. The theme for Week One is make a plan for yourself, family and friends. Faloon says it’s important to learn your evacuation zone and have a plan, check your insurance coverage, and plan financially for an emergency.
Ellsworth High School
(Ellsworth) Lots of schools around Maine are already in session…tomorrow is the first day back to school for students at Ellsworth Elementary Middle School, but superintendent Dan Higgins says not all the high schoolers begin tomorrow. Higgins reminds everyone to use the new Lejok Street entrance to Ellsworth High School.
Project Hope
(Ellsworth) Healthy Acadia encourages community members to get involved in helping friends and neighbors recover from addiction. September is National Recovery Month and Healthy Acadia spokeswoman Denise Black says there are lots of opportunities to make a difference. Project Hope operates on Tuesdays from 8am to 4pm at the Ellsworth police department. Chief Glenn Moshier says takers have been sporadic in recent weeks.
Erratic Driver-Drugs
(Hancock) An erratic driver in Hancock turned out to be under the influence of drugs and also in possession of them. Two officers from Troop J pulled over the vehicle and found 20-year-old Hector Sanchez of Puerto Rico had more than 30 grams of heroin in the car. He’s charged with Aggravated Trafficking and OUI. Officers also arrested two passengers in the car, 20-year-old Ricardo Roman and 19-year-old Joseph Rivera both of Puerto Rico, for drug trafficking.
Ohio St. Drugs
(Bangor) A Bangor couple who sold heroin and crack cocaine to undercover agents were busted at an Ohio Street apartment building that’s known for having drug activity. Drug agents and Bangor police searched the apartment and seized 9 grams of heroin, $35-hundred dollars in cash and other evidence of drug trafficking. 54-year-old Peter Spann and his wife Diana face drug charges. The same location was raided in 2011 when numerous individuals were charged and convicted in federal court.
Heroin Arrest
(Bangor) A Bronx man is behind bars for allegedly selling heroin in Hancock and Penobscot Counties. Drug agents arrested 28-year-old Jeremy Cruz on Main Street in Bangor for Aggravated Trafficking for selling drugs within a thousand feet of a “drug free safe zone”. The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency reports they’ve been investigating Cruz for months and made an undercover purchase.
