Orland Trash
(Orland) – Orland citizens have nixed home trash pickup and instead will build a transfer station. The Ellsworth American reports the town meeting vote wasn’t even close to scuttle a door to door trash pickup – voters rejected it 121-to-7 at a special town meeting. Orland residents had used the Bucksport transfer station, but Bucksport has voted to send its trash to the new Fiberight plant under construction in Hampden, while Orland will continue to send its trash to the PERC incinerator in Orrington. Costs and concerns about private road pickup drove the vote to scuttle the curbside pickup plan.
Social Security Fraud
(Bangor) – A 45-year old Calais woman faces up to 5-years in prison and a quarter million dollar fine after pleading guilty to stealing Social Security benefits. The US Attorney’s office tells Star 97.7 Amy Lynn Holmes collected SSI benefits for more than 12-years between 2004 and 2016, claiming she lived alone and did not receive help from anyone else. In fact Holmes was married and did not disclose her husband’s income.
Stockton Springs Election
(Stockton Springs) – A former Selectman in Stockton Springs will serve out the rest of a term vacated when another Selectman resigned. Tom Fraser won yesterday’s special election by just 5-votes according to Village Soup dot-com. Fraser replaces Sara Skolfield who stepped down in early July. He was a selectman for several years, retiring in 2011.
Zumba – Fundraiser
(Ellsworth) Downeast Family YMCA fitness instructor Robin Clarke is leading a Zumba fundraiser this evening. Clarke says it benefits a local family with funeral expenses after the unexpected passing of a relative, Alison Moon, who was visiting the area for her bridal shower.
5-yr old Girl Shot
(Scarborough) – State police say it’ll be a while before they can release what happened in a Scarborough home that led to a 5-year old Belfast girl’s shooting death. Spokesman Steve McCausland said Elise Dorr, her parents and siblings were staying at their grandparents’ home when the shooting occurred Monday evening. Dorr died en route to the hospital. Police interviewed both parents who were in the home when the shooting occurred.
Woman Shot
(Westbrook) An autopsy on a Westbrook woman, who died from a gunshot wound while in her home, determined the death was suicide. Police went to the Falmouth Street home of 50-year-old Norma Bridges around 9 Monday evening.
Fiber Optic Presentation
(Ellsworth) Ellsworth is now one of 3 communities in Maine to offer fiber optic broadband service. The city hopes with the new fiber optic network connection that more businesses will take up residency in Ellsworth. Senator Brian Langley spoke at Tuesday’s presentation about being a local business owner and the benefits of high speed internet
Changing Columbus Day
(Bangor) Bangor has become the 2nd city in Maine to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day as a replacement for Columbus Day on the second Monday in October. The Bangor Daily News reports city councilors voted unanimously to change the holiday’s name after members of the Penobscot Nation made the request. Belfast was the first city in Maine to take that step in 2015.
Firearms Charge
(Waterville) The US Attorney’s office reports a Waterville man was found guilty Monday of illegally receiving and shipping guns. Trial evidence revealed that in 2012 and 2013, 50-year-old Julian Petre bought firearms from out-of-state sellers intending to unlawfully ship them overseas; some were sent to Romania. Petre faces up to 10-years in prison, a quarter-million dollar fine and 3-years of supervised release. He was found not guilty of smuggling and money laundering charges.
Boat Jumper Fined
(Portland) A man who jumped off a Casco Bay Lines vessel in the Fore River last month is fined a $25-hundred-dollar civil penalty. Coast Guard Sector Northern New England tells Star 97-7 on the morning of July 2nd a ship returning to the State Pier in Portland was carrying 90 passengers when an unnamed man jumped overboard. The jumper swam to the other side of the channel were police were waiting to arrest him. The Coast Guard Captain of the Port says jumping off a vessel places the vessel, its crew, and other passengers in danger.
