5-year old shot
(Scarborough) – State Police say a 5-year old girl is dead after a shooting in Scarborough. It happened around 7-thirty last night. The youngster was in a relative’s home and at least one parent was with her. An ambulance rushed the girl to the hospital, but she died en-route.
Tax Acquired Auction
(Blue Hill) – The Town of Blue Hill had a big cash infusion when it auctioned off a dilapidated tax acquired property. A neighbor on Parker Point bid $425-thousand dollars for the home and acreage, nearly $300-thousand dollars more than town had for an assessed value. The Ellsworth American reports the town opted to go to auction to see if it could sell closer to fair market value. The former owner, Denise Wilbur, did not pay the property taxes for more than 3-years and did not respond to official town notifications.
Pastor Pleads
(Tremont) – A man who once served as the pastor of a pair of Tremont churches has entered a guilty plea to possessing child porn. WABI-TV reports Wayne Buchanan will serve a one-year prison term. Police arrested Buchanan in January 2016 after finding the images on his computer. He resigned as pastor of the two churches at about the same time.
Fiber Optic Network
(Ellsworth) Ellsworth welcomes open access fiber optic network to the area with a lighting presentation at the Union River Center for Innovation. Ellsworth IT director Jason Ingalls says the city worked with Tilson Technologies to determine the city’s broadband needs. Ingalls says it took two years to plan and construct the fiber optic network. Guest speakers for the lighting ceremony this afternoon include US Senator Angus King, State Senator Brian Langley, and a representative from Great Works Internet.
Ride for Life
(Surry) Registration is open for the Beth Wright Cancer Resource Center’s annual Ride for Life. Program and volunteer coordinator Naomi Graychase says the event’s inception happened 13 years ago when the Beth Wright Center was in its infancy. Graychase says that initial $300 turned into thousands of dollars over the years as the ride continues to grow. Ride for Life is September 9th, register by contacting the Beth Wright Cancer Resource Center in Ellsworth.
Masked Man Sought
(Camden) – A man wearing a black mask and bright yellow coveralls tried to break into a Brinks truck yesterday morning in Camden as it was parked outside the Hannaford Supermarket. The door was locked, and he fled on foot. Police used a search dog to comb the woods behind the shopping plaza on Route 1 but eventually called off the search, saying it’s likely the potential robber fled the area. The man did not display a weapon.
Murder Indictment
(W. Gardiner) A West Gardiner man was arraigned for the shooting death of a Chelsea man on June 17th. The Kennebec Journal reports 26-year-old Derrick Dupont was indicted for the murder that occurred on Yeaton Drive in West Gardiner. The state medical examiner determined 41-year-old James Leslie Haskell Junior suffered gunshot wounds to his head, neck and stomach. Dupont appeared at the Capital Judicial Center yesterday.
Naturalization Ceremony
(Maine) Seventy immigrants from around the world will take the oath of citizenship for the district of Maine next month. During the naturalization ceremony the Court will also observe the 230th anniversary of the Constitution of the United States and the 228th anniversary of the federal courts. The district of Maine was one of the original 13 district courts established by the Judiciary Act of 1789. The ceremony is at 10am September 19th at the University of Southern Maine’s Hannaford Hall Auditorium.
Canadian Trade
(Maine) Maine’s Republican governor is reassuring Canadian leaders that President Donald Trump “truly believes” in having free trade, and they shouldn’t read too much into what they hear. Governor Paul LePage and other New England governors met with Eastern Canadian premiers on Monday to discuss Canadian-U.S. trade relations, days after Trump threatened to abandon the North American Free Trade Agreement.
