Bike Crash
(Warren) – A motorcyclist from Rockland is recovering from internal injuries and broken bones at a hospital after he slammed into a car that pulled onto Route 235 in Warren. The Knox County Sheriff’s Department tells Star 97.7 that John Shane had no chance to avoid the crash at the intersection of the Old Augusta Road. The car’s driver apparently did not see Shane’s bike as it approached the intersection.
Boating Fatality
(Biddeford) – A wave capsized a 21-foot fishing boat about 10-miles off Biddeford Pool, dumping four people into the chilly ocean waters. One of them managed to find a handgun and fire a shot to alert nearby boaters to help. That worked as a good Samaritan pulled 3-of them to safety. They couldn’t find the fourth, a 53-year old woman. Marine Patrol and State Police divers recovered her body about 4-hours after the mishap. They’ve not yet released names of those involved.
Parks & Rec Dept
(Ellsworth) The discussion as to whether the city of Ellsworth should create a Parks and Recreation Department will continue at the next regular monthly meeting of the Recreation Commission. A quorum of Ellsworth city councilors will be as well. The public is welcome to attend the meeting in the City Hall Auditorium on September 6th at 6PM.
Open Lighthouse Day
(Maine) More than a dozen lighthouses across Maine will allow free entry during the 9th annual Open Lighthouse Day. With more coastal lighthouses than anywhere else in the nation, Maine is often referred to as “The Lighthouse State”. By the turn of the 20th century, at least 70 lighthouses guarded Maine’s seacoast, deepest rivers and even one lake. Today, 66 of these lighthouses still stand. On September 9th twenty-five of these lighthouses can be toured for free from 9am to 3pm during Open Lighthouse Day. Murder Indictment
(Jay) A grand jury has indicted a Jay man on murder charges after he allegedly beat his girlfriend to death with a baseball bat. 56-year-old James “Ted” Sweeney turned himself in to police last month handing them a note that admitted to the crime but did not confess to the murder. Court records say Sweeney, who is deaf, was afraid his live-in girlfriend of 11 years was going to leave him. Investigators found the body of 51-year-old Wendy Douglass at her Jewell Street home she shared with Sweeney.
Shooting Assault Indictment
(Readfield) A grand jury has indicted a Readfield woman accused of shooting and injuring her husband. Last May 61-year-old Sally Ann Earl-Costello allegedly shot her husband while he sat outside on the deck at their Sturtevant Hill Road home. 81-year-old Hugh Costello was hospitalized; Earl-Costello was charged with Elevated Aggravated Assault. Police say they responded to multiple domestic disturbances between the couple.
F&F Market Good-bye
(Ellsworth) A customer appreciation celebration and good-bye of sorts for the owners of Friends and Family Market in Ellsworth. Ron and Launa Picard said goodbye to customers on Friday after announcing the week before they were selling their State Street business. New owner David Welch, and son Matthew who will manage the store, take over the grocery market and gas station this week.
Lejok Traffic Light
(Ellsworth) – The newest traffic light in Ellsworth is finally operational, just in time for the school year to start. The light at the intersection of State and the new Lejok Street will control traffic going into and out of Ellsworth High School. Workers installed it last spring, but it has flashed for the past several months until the new controller arrived last week. The traffic light at the old Ellsworth High School entrance came down a few weeks ago.
Mosquito Disease
(Portland) Public health officials say two more cases of Jamestown Canyon virus have been identified in Maine, bringing the total number of cases to three. This is the first year the mosquito-borne disease has been detected in the state. State epidemiologist Siiri Bennett says it’s not clear that the virus is becoming more common or if it’s being detected through better testing.
