Car Thief Captured
(Harrington) – A Harrington man faces numerous charges after police captured him Saturday afternoon. State Police Lieutenant Rod Charette tells Star 97.7 they were looking for 37-year old Jonathan Baldwin after a citizen spotted him Friday and tried to keep watch on Baldwin until police could arrive Baldwin allegedly drove off in his truck, but rolled that over. He then allegedly stole two vehicles, and police eventually captured him Saturday afternoon. Baldwin was on release from the Hancock County Jail, and now faces numerous charges in connection to the chase and other incidents in Washington County.
Fatal Crashes
(Searsmont) – At least three people died in vehicle crashes during the weekend. The Waldo County Sheriff’s Office reports a man from China Maine died Friday afternoon on Route 3 in Searsmont. 73-year old George Studley’s truck crossed the center line and struck another vehicle head on, killing him. State Police spokesman Steve McCausland tells Star 97.7 that 45-year old Edward Stanhope of Windham died when his motorcycle crashed in Hollis. State Police are also investigating a fatal crash in Lebanon killed a New Hampshire man. He and a passenger had just attended a marijuana festival before their pickup truck flipped over.
Wilson Hall
(Bucksport) – Town councilors in Bucksport are considering putting an advisory question about the future of a dilapidated seminary building before voters in November. Bids to repair the roof at Wilson Hall came in a lot higher than expected – the lowest was about $180-thousand dollars. The seminary is on the National Historic Register, but has been closed since the 1970s and rain has infiltrated the large brick building, rotting the wood inside and causing a lot of mold buildup. Town officials tell the Ellsworth American they’ve not heard much from residents about preserving the building.
Solar Eclipse
(Maine) University of Maine Orono planetarium director Shawn Laatsch says if you’re unable to be outside this afternoon during the solar eclipse there are opportunities to check it out online, but nothing beats the real thing.Laatsch says Baxter State Park will be perfect viewing for the next solar eclipse coming in 2024.
Epi-Pen Settlement
(Maine/USA) The maker of the life saving EpiPen is settling a lawsuit filed by the United States and other states including Maine. Attorney General Janet Mills announces drug company Mylan will pay $4-hundred-65-Million-dollars for intentionally underpaying rebates owed to the Medicaid program. As part of the settlement the state of Maine will receive about $950-thousand-dollars in restitution to MaineCare and other recovery.
Cancer Navigation Grant
(Washington Cty) Funding for cancer patient navigation services in Washington County has been secured for the next two years, thanks to $50-thousand-dollar grant from the H. King and Jean Cummings Charitable Fund of the Maine Community Foundation. The Beth Wright Cancer Resource Center and Healthy Acadia continue partnering to support patients at all stages of their cancer journeys. Downeast Cancer Patient Navigation services launched in 2016 and currently helps about 70 cancer patients and caregivers with treatment, recovery, and support resources.
Paint Crash
(Ellsworth) A messy accident in Ellsworth during the Friday morning commute held up motorists coming in from the Surry Road and the Bucksport Road. WABI-TV reports a police officer watched as a well-meaning driver waved another car through the intersection of Route 172 and Route 1 at Bridge Hill. That driver didn’t see a pickup truck coming up the hill; the truck was carrying two 5-gallon buckets of white paint that flew out of the truck bed and spilled on the road and other cars. Traffic was diverted onto Christian Ridge Road during the clean up. No charges will be filed.
