Escapee Captured
(Warren) – A 26-year old from Surry will likely face extra time in prison after he walked away from a work detail this week in the Rockland area. Police captured Jacob Carney after he failed to return to the Bolduc facility because he walked off the job. Carney is serving a 2-and-a-half year prison term following his conviction of felony theft; he stole an I-phone from a student at Ellsworth High School.
Manset Fire
(Southwest Harbor) – Fire badly damaged a rental home in the Manset section of Southwest Harbor last evening. Firefighters from all four towns on MDI along with Trenton responded to the blaze just before 5:30 last evening. The Mt. Desert Islander reports firefighters took about an hour and a half to extinguish the blaze, and no injuries reported. The renters who occupied the home which sits atop several large garages returned home and discovered the blaze.
Eclipse Eye Protection
(Maine) If you plan to watch Monday’s solar eclipse you’ve got 3 days left to make sure you have the proper eye protection. Penobscot Eye Care certified optician Rebecca Bossie says watching the historic eclipse without the right eyewear just isn’t worth the risk. A partial view of the eclipse will be seen in Maine from 1:35 to 3:55 Monday afternoon. Bossie says before purchasing solar eclipse glasses at a local store or pharmacy be sure the glasses are ISO compliant.
F&F Market Selling
(Ellsworth) New owners will operate Friends and Family Market in Ellsworth soon. Current owner Ron Picard says David Welch of Pittsfield will buy the market and gas station, closing on the deal in a couple weeks. Welch’s son Matthew will manage the business. Picard said he and his wife Launa are now in their mid 60’s and running a small grocery store is better suited for someone younger.
Bank Robber Captured
(Arundel) A 4-hour manhunt by a team of state troopers led to a suspected Arundel bank robber’s capture. Police say 48-year old Glen Brackett of Biddeford entered Infinity Federal Credit Union on Route 111, stole an undisclosed amount of money and fled in a car. Police later found that vehicle abandoned in Biddeford. Dogs and an airplane tracked the suspect to a wooded area off Lincoln Street in Saco. One of the K9s located Brackett. They found the stolen cash under a log near where Brackett was captured.
Kayaker Drowning
(Whiting) Wardens say it was a Machias man who drowned Wednesday night while kayaking on Indian Lake in Whiting. 48-year-old Allen Devericks and his daughter were kayaking when the vessel overturned. Game Wardens say neither person wore a lifejacket; Devericks slipped beneath the surface and rescuers could not revive him. So far this year 13-people have drowned in Maine.
House Fire
(South Thomaston) – A South Thomaston home that caught fire a year and a half ago went up in flames again yesterday. Firefighters from several communities worked to keep the flames from spreading to the woods and a nearby trailer on Field Street. Rockland’s fire chief tells the Pen Bay Pilot the burning home was pretty much gone when the first firefighters arrived on scene. No injuries are reported. Authorities never determined the cause of the fire that rendered the home unlivable in January 2016.
Ellsworth Public Safety Building
(Ellsworth) – The high school baseball field in front of Ellsworth High School could become the new location for a public safety facility. City officials will ask the City Council to approve a $70-thousand dollar budget to design a new police and fire station. Fire Chief Richard Tupper says the ballfield appears to be ideally located – the school would build a new ballfield behind the high school. Besides the city police and fire stations, there is talk about locating the county Regional Communications Center and privately owned County Ambulance at the complex.
