Waldo County Fatals
(Prospect) – The skid marks and damage to the rock cliffs at the Prospect end of the Penobscot Narrows Bridge show the remains of the early morning carnage this weekend that left two people dead and two seriously injured. The Waldo County Sheriff’s Department reports to Star 97.7 that 39-year old Daniel Huntington of New Jersey and 37-year old Sarah Brown of Monroe perished in the early morning single vehicle crash. Four hours earlier, Deputies responded to another fatal accident in Waldo County. That crash on the Loggin Road in Frankfort killed 29-year old Michael Butler of Winterport. Both accidents remain under investigation.
Pharmacy Fined
(Orono) – The owner of an Orono Pharmacy will have to cough up $60-thousand dollars to the federal government. The US Attorney’s office reports to Star 97.7 that Orono Pharmacy, Inc. and owner Ali Aghamoosa didn’t keep good records about controlled substances they obtained and dispensed. One pharmacist diverted the drugs and another falsified records. The fine payment does not indicate any guilt on the pharmacy’s part.
Charlottesville Vigils
(Gouldsboro) – Dozens of Mainers held vigils last evening to protest the events in Charlottesville Virginia that left one person dead during a white supremacist rally. Gatherings across the state included people in Blue Hill, Bar Harbor and Gouldsboro, some holding signs that read Love; Resist Hate and Silence is Acceptance, Speak Loudly.
Historical Society Meeting
(Ellsworth) The next meeting of the Ellsworth Historical Society is tonight. Members will discuss business but a special presentation will be given by Darlene Springer with memories of Ellsworth’s past. The public is invited to the Chamberlin House on State Street for tonight’s meeting and presentation at 7 o’clock.
Library Anniversary
(Ellsworth) The Ellsworth Public Library will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Tisdale House on Thursday. Director Amy Wisehart says it’s an opportunity for the community to appreciate the historically and culturally significant building. The Federalist style house is on the National Register of Historic Places. Thursday’s celebration is 4 to 7PM.
Standoff Indictment
(Seal Harbor) The Hancock County grand jury has indicted a Seal Harbor man accused of causing a police standoff in Gouldsboro 32-year-old Alan Walton faces more than a dozen charges for the June incident. Walton was armed inside a home on Main Street; the state police tactical team and other agencies surrounded the building until Walton surrendered a few hours later. At the time he was also wanted for burglaries in Bar Harbor and Trenton. The grand jury also indicted Walton for those incidents.
Armed Robbery Indictment
(Blue Hill) – Grand juries in both Hancock and Penobscot Counties have indicted a 49-year old Blue Hill man on numerous crimes. Surveillance cameras recorded Anthony Yurchick breaking into gas pumps at a shopping complex in Blue Hill. A couple days later, police say he held up a motel in Brewer. Yurchick is charged with robbery, theft, and possessing a firearm as a felon among other crimes.
Island Internet
(Isleford) Islesford prepares for a new tower that will bring high-speed internet to the island. A 100-foot tower has been ordered and will be assembled in September. The Mt Desert Islander reports the access road to the tower site will be cleared soon. The area’s current contract with Redzone Wireless ends in October. Axiom Technologies hopes to build fiber to every year-round home on Islesford before that service stops. Axiom will provide broadband service for Greater Cranberry and Sutton islands as well beginning next spring. That requires a 30-foot tower attached to a building at the Cranberry Island Boatyard.
Alleged Killer Returns
(Machias) The New York woman accused in the killing of 57-year-old Sally Shaw in Cherryfield last month made her first court appearance. The Ellsworth American reports officers transported 19-year-old Quaneysha Greeley to Maine Thursday to face murder charges in Machias court on Friday. 37-year-old Carine Reeves is also charged in Shaw’s death but he remains in New York until an assault case there is resolved.
Poliquin Moving
(Oakland) A Maine congressman has put up his home for sale, leading some to speculate a run for governor in the future. The Morning Sentinel reports U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin is selling his home in Oakland so he can downsize after his son graduated from college.
Mill Update
(Jay) Owners of a Maine paper mill say they are exploring investment options after bouncing back from bankruptcy. Centralmaine.com reports Verso Paper has hired a consultant to review each of its seven mills and explore options such as adding new products or selling the mill.
