Ellsworth Fire
(Ellsworth) – It took about an hour for firefighters to control a blaze in North Ellsworth this morning. The first 9-1-1 calls came in around 5-o’clock to 1185 Mariaville Road. Firefighters from Ellsworth, Lamoine, Hancock, Mariaville and Trenton rushed to the scene, finding the building engulfed in flames, but the occupants outside. No serious injuries are reported. Tax records show Mark and Debra Dane own the property at that address.
Greenfield Man Sentenced
(Bangor) – A 23-year old Greenfield man will spend the next 2-and-a-half years in prison after pleading no contest to manslaughter after an accident killed his brother. Nicholas Spencer was driving drunk, veered off the road, and hit a utility pole. Their truck caught fire and his 28-year old brother Matthew died in the crash. Nicholas had a previous OUI conviction. WABI-TV reports his family asked for leniency, saying too long in prison would be like losing another son.
Tenant’s Harbor Fatal
(Bath) – A 31-year old Tenant’s Harbor man is dead after a crash in Bath. Sheldon Curtis was riding in the vehicle, and police say he flew out of the front seat when the driver ran a stop sign and crashed into another vehicle. Four people in both vehicles suffered injuries and ambulances took them to the hospital. Police say it’s not clear if anyone will face charges.
Tax Relief
(Ellsworth) Some tax relief for property owners in Ellsworth from an unsuspecting source. The state budget approved by lawmakers in July put more money toward Maine schools. The Ellsworth American reports the Ellsworth School Department saw the second biggest boost in Hancock County receiving over $333-thousand-dollars. At a special meeting Monday city councilors approved putting $295-thousand-dollars toward property tax relief. The remaining balance will go toward renovating the Hancock County Technical Center to accommodate the expanded biomedical program.
Drug Arrest
(Bath) Police arrested a Delaware man enroute to Bath to deliver heroin and crack cocaine before he reached his destination. Drug agents had investigated 25-year-old Kyle Rivers for months for selling drugs in the Bath-Brunswick area. Bath police stopped Rivers’ rental car around 5:30 Tuesday evening and arrested him. A search of his hotel room turned up heroin, crack cocaine, Xanax pills and cash. Rivers is charged with Aggravated Drug Trafficking.
Bus-Motorcycle Death
(Caribou) Police in Aroostook County are investigating the death of a motorcyclist who collided with a school bus and died. Police say 63-year-old Leonard Curtis of Presque Isle was not wearing a helmet when he hit the bus Tuesday afternoon as it was turning at the intersection of Route 89 and Bowles Road in Caribou. The bus driver and one person on board were not injured.
Tractor Assault
(Acton) York County deputies arrested a landlord in Acton for allegedly running over a tenant with his tractor. 64-year-old Leslie Dennis contacted the Sheriff’s Department early Monday because two female tenants he was planning to evict were digging up plants in his backyard. The Sheriff’s Department tells WABI-TV the digging continued into the evening until Dennis got on his tractor and drove at the women in a threatening manner. One of the women’s sons hit Dennis with a shovel. Dennis hit the man with his tractor then ran over his mother and broke her hip. He’s charged with aggravated assault.
Oyster Farm
(Bar Harbor) A Salisbury Cove couple has the green light from the US Army Corps of Engineers to start up a 22-and-a-half-acre oyster farm in Thomas Bay. The Department of Marine Resources granted Jesse and Joanne Fogg of Bar Harbor Oyster Company a 10-year aquaculture lease last September to raise American and European oysters on two lease sites. The Mt Desert Islander reports a public hearing last October was attended by fishermen, biologists, pilots and residents – some speaking in favor of and others against the proposed oyster farm. The Foggs were granted a permit a few weeks ago by the Army Corps and they plan to add 60 more cages this year in addition to the 67 cages the company already has in the bay.
Grieving Parent Support
(Ellsworth) With 378 drug overdose deaths in Maine last year a local organization is stepping up to help grieving parents. Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County executive director Jody Wolford-Tucker says multiple community members have requested a support group for those who have lost a child due to drug overdose. The new group meets Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 7:30 beginning August 31st through October 5th. Wolford-Tucker says the group is a safe, non-judgmental, confidential space to receive support and share difficult emotions. Contact Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County to register.
Winnebago Wreck
(Litchfield) A traffic mess on the Maine Turnpike when a Winnebago’s tire blew out causing the vehicle to swerve and hit a guardrail. A Florida man was driving his Winnebago south about 3 o’clock Tuesday afternoon when the mishap occurred. The crash caused dirt to fly up onto the windshield of another southbound motorist, Pauley Sanipass of New Brunswick, who couldn’t see and rolled her vehicle over the median. Sanipass was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Traffic in both directions was reduced to one lane as police and clean up crews worked at the scene. No charges expected.
