Naloxone Training
(Ellsworth) With heroin overdoses on the rise, Healthy Acadia and the Ellsworth police department have partnered with Health Equity Alliance to offer Naloxone Overdose Reversal Training. Participants will learn the science behind opiate addiction, how to assist people in all stages of addiction and recovery, and receive a Naloxone overdose reversal kit. Healthy Acadia spokeswoman Denise Black tells Star 97-7 tonight’s training filled up quickly and they anticipate holding another one in the fall.
Smuggling Charge
(Portland) – Federal Authorities have charged a 40-year old Mexican citizen with human smuggling. The US Attorney’s Office tells Star 97.7 that Silvino Orduna-Cabrera appeared in federal court in Portland along with two other Mexican citizens who previously had been removed from the US. Immigration officers arrested the three in Maine.
Fenton – Labor Officer
(Augusta) – A Lamoine native is the state’s new chief hearing officer for the Bureau of Unemployment Compensation. Hank Fenton will continue reforms in the unemployment system that started about 3-years ago. Fenton was part of Governor Paul LePage’s legal team and advised the Governor on matters of public safety and corrections. He graduated from +MDI High School and the U-Maine School of Law.
Brechlin Leaving
(Bar Harbor) – If it happened on Mt. Desert Island, chances are that Earl Brechlin wrote about it, first for the defunct Bar Harbor Times and now for the Mt. Desert Islander. The newspaper editor and reporter is leaving the post he’s held since the latter paper’s beginning and will work for the Friends of Acadia organization as a communications director. Brechlin had more than 30-years between the two newspapers and has won numerous state, regional and national reporting awards.
I-395 Crash/OUI
(Brewer) – Police say a truck driver was drunk when his dump truck flipped over on Interstate 395 in Brewer during the weekend. WABI-TV reports Steven Galati faces OUI charges for Saturday’s crash on exit 6 in Brewer. His truck carried paving material which spilled. Officers had to close down the road for hours while cleanup crews picked up the mess.
Holden Drug Arrests
(Holden) – Police in Holden say the heroin epidemic is hitting Eastern Maine hard. The small town police force arrested 3-people in less than 8-hours on heroin charges during the weekend. Friday night officers got a tip about a car and pulled over 25-year old Kyle Baughman of Deer Isle, finding heroin. A few hours later on Saturday morning, they pulled over another car with 33-year old Harrington residents Brandy Pomichter and Bryan Robbins inside. They face felony heroin charges based on the amount of drugs found in their vehicle. Police Chief Chris Greeley tells WABI-TV they’ve responded to numerous other incidents involving heroin in the past few months.
Pool Explosion
(Chester) – Cleaning a swimming pool turned into an explosive situation for a Chester couple during the weekend. The Bangor Daily News reports a mixture of pool cleaning chemicals caused an explosion that broke a window on the couple’s home. They sustained minor injuries – they were able to drive to the Lincoln fire station where an ambulance crew checked them out yesterday morning. Fire officials say the explosion was an accident – the two were simply cleaning the pool with every day chemicals.
Collins – Health
(Bangor) – Maine Senator Susan Collins says the President and Congress have helped contribute to problems with the affordable care act. Speaking on Meet the Press yesterday, Collins says she’s concerned that the nation’s lowest wage earners will suffer while Congress works on coming up with something better than Obamacare.
