Bucksport Fire
(Bucksport) – Fire ripped through a Bucksport home late yesterday afternoon, leaving the 2nd floor in ruins. Firefighters from several communities saw flames jumping out of the top floors when they arrived at the White Tail Ridge home. They called in the State Fire Marshal’s office to search for the cause. Authorities report only minor injuries.
Carriage Road Closure
(Acadia National Park) – A mile of carriage road in Acadia National Park will close down until the end of September. Park spokesman John Kelly reports to Star 97.7 the closure will allow construction crews to repair a stone retaining wall that collapsed in the fall of 2015. The closure takes place between the Jordan Pond gate house and Wildwood Stables. Park officials say water eroded away the soil behind the retaining wall, causing a 10-foot section to collapse. They will replace the entire 220-foot long wall.
Cruise Ship Moratorium
(SW Harbor) – The question of whether huge cruise ships should be able to visit Southwest Harbor goes to voters on August 15th. Town officials tell Star 97.7 they were preparing a special town meeting warrant which Selectmen signed last night to call for a moratorium on ships carrying over 50-passengers. If passed, that would give the town six months to come up with an ordinance regulating ships in Southwest Harbor. A proposal for a large cruise ship to visit met with strong opposition a few weeks ago.
Yachts – MDI
(Mt. Desert Island) – Some pretty good sized yachts have started to show up around Mt. Desert Island as owners vacation in Maine. The Bangor Daily News reports the 139-foot sail boat Rebecca is anchored in Somes Sound. The boat belongs to Charles Butts who raced it in the America’s Cup Super Regatta earlier this year. Large motorized ships belonging to billionaires Larry Silverstein and former Reebok CEO Paul Fireman have also dropped anchor off Bar Harbor.
Politics
(Augusta) The Maine Legislature returns to Augusta next week to wrap up the current session. Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee chair Louie Luchini says the remaining work includes taking care of bills vetoed by Governor Paul LePage and also working on the bond package. Luchini says the Elections oversight committee will work on ranked choice voting, and the Ethics Commission is continuing to ivestigate issues around a referendum for a casino in York County.
PSAP Vote UPDATE
(Ellsworth) – Overwhelming opposition by town officials across Hancock County has led to unanimous rejection of a proposal to have Penobscot County answer 9-1-1 calls and transfer those calls to dispatchers in Ellsworth. The vote to retain the public safety answering point came yesterday morning. County commissioners floated the idea as a potential future money saver as the Hancock County Regional Communications Center struggles with finding dispatchers and adequate space to accommodate an increasing number of emergency calls.
Carriage Barn
(Ellsworth) Woodlawn Museum in Ellsworth plans to renovate the Carriage Barn to create space for educational and programming purposes. Executive director Joshua Torrance says the challenge is restoring the 160-year-old barn to look authentic yet meet today’s building and safety codes. Torrance says Woodlawn has raised at least 5-million of their $8-point-2-million-dollar capital campaign goal.

- The Red Sox have acquired Eduardo Nunez from the San Francisco Giants for a pair of minor league pitchers. Nunez hits well and is strong defensively in the infield.

- Research shows rampant brain disease among former football players ranging from high school to the NFL. In exams on 111-former NFL players, 110-of them suffered from CTE which is associated from repeated head blows.
