Missing Man
(Greenwood) – Searchers spent the overnight looking for an 87-year old Greenwood man after his family reported him missing yesterday. Peter Tomge went for a walk at noon time with his two dogs. When he hadn’t returned 5-hours later his family called 9-1-1. The Warden Service reports they and the Maine Association of Search and Rescue looked for hours overnight with no signs of Tomge or the dogs. They’ve asked anyone who might have seen him to call authorities.
Baby Abduction
(Holden) – Police have arrested a 29-year old Dedham man after they say he broke into a former girlfriend’s home, threatened her and a new boyfriend with a knife, and took his baby son. Holden police tell the Bangor Daily News that Justin Bowen is charged with domestic violence crimes and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon. Police caught him a short time after the incident, and he’s held at the Penobscot County jail. The baby is back with his mother.
Park Crash
(Acadia National Park) – None of the 7-people inside a van that plunged 30-feet down an Acadia National Park embankment suffered serious injuries Friday afternoon. The Mt. Desert Islander reports a Massachusetts man driving the vehicle fell asleep at the wheel and the vehicle went off the Park Loop Road, closing the road for a few hours. Rescue workers had to call in a boom truck from a Town Hill masonry company to lift the van up the cliff and back onto the road. Park rangers credit airbags with helping to prevent injuries.
Mt. Desert Crosswalks
(Mt. Desert) – The Town of Mt. Desert has a lot of crosswalks painted in the roads, but most of them do not meet safety or ADA standards. The Mt. Desert Islander reports some of those crosswalks will disappear, others may need repainting and construction work. One crosswalk is described as the crosswalk to no-where – it’s along Route 102 in Somesville and is located near the Acadia Repertory Theater. A public works official attended a recent workshop on road markings and returned to report that most of the crosswalks in town did not meet federal marking standards.
Selectman Resigns
(Stockton Springs) – A special election is likely later this summer in Stockton Springs after one of the town’s three Selectmen resigned. Village Soup dot-com reports Sara Skolfield submitted her resignation for personal reasons, leaving just two Selectmen on the board, one of whom just took office 10-days ago. Nomination papers will soon become available to run for the seat; the term will run through next June when Skolfield’s term would have ended.
Bastille Day
(Castine) Castine will honor its French heritage this Friday on Bastille Day. Event “head of promotions” Chrissy Allen says it’s a newer tradition for Castine that’s rich in history. A list of Bastille Day events can be found on the town’s website: Visit Castine dot Com.
Drug Arrests
(Bangor) Two New York men selling drugs out of a Bangor motel now have different accommodations – at the Penobscot County Jail. Maine Drug Enforcement agents searched the Odlin Road motel room Thursday night and seized 20 grams of crack cocaine and $20-thousand-dollars in suspected cash proceeds. Jelani Witt and Rodney Tyler of Brooklyn New York face Unlawful Drug Trafficking charges. Bangor PD assisted in the investigation and more arrests are likely.
VA Benefits Theft
(Chelsea) A Chelsea man who pled guilty to theft of VA benefits will be sentenced later. Court documents say 63-year-old Victor Lawrence submitted 77 claims to US Department of Veterans Affairs for travel reimbursement in 2015 and 2016. Lawrence stated he drove nearly 100 miles to get treatment at Togus VA Medical Center when he actually lived less than 6 miles away. He faces up to 10-years in prison and a quarter million dollar fine.
Firearms Plea
(Bangor) – A 29-year old Waldo County man faces up to 10-years in prison and a quarter million dollar fine after pleading guilty to possessing a firearm when he was not supposed to. The US Attorney’s office reports to Star 97.7 that Jesse Newton entered a guilty plea in federal court. Investigators found a loaded semi-automatic pistol, marijuana plants, rifle stocks and a cell phone when they searched his home in Waldo. He was on supervised release following a 2013 felony firearms conviction. Further investigation found Newton used the gun for target practice. He will be sentenced later.
