Burn Permits
(Augusta) – If you plan to burn a brush pile or have a campfire, state law requires an open burning permit. In recent years, private companies have popped up to issue permits on line. Maine Forest Ranger spokesman Kent Nelson says those permit systems do not have state approval. Nelson says the private burn permit system has issued some permits when towns or rangers would not do so.
Cruiser / Fleeing suspect
(Wells) – As police officers on foot tried to run down a drunk driving suspect in Wells, the Florida man fell in a field, and a police cruiser ran over him. Keith Lee suffered non-life-threatening injuries. State Police spokesman Steve McCausland reports to Star 97.7 that officers responded to a convenience store after they got a report of an erratically driven vehicle. After two officers conducted a field sobriety test, Lee ran off when they tried to arrest him. The Wells police department requested that State Police investigate.
Burglary Arrests
(Patten) – Penobscot County deputies may have solved a bunch of crimes in the Patten area. Sheriff Troy Morton reports to Star 97.7 that officers arrested 24-year old Lacey Brackett of Sherman and 25-year old Nicholas Champagne of Patten. Morton said the department received numerous burglary, theft and criminal mischief complaints over the past several months, and they got warrants to arrest the pair along with one juvenile. Morton said several incidents remain under investigation.
Taste of Ellsworth
(Ellsworth) Tomorrow is the first Taste of Ellsworth, coordinated by the Heart of Ellsworth association. Executive Director Cara Romano says 8 local eateries will set up on the small street downtown located between the old Grasshopper Shop and J & B Atlantic. Emmaus Auction
(Ellsworth) The biggest fund raiser of the year for the Emmaus Homeless Shelter in Ellsworth is this Sunday. Assistant director Stacey Herrick says their fundraising auction begins at Noon with a silent auction and Chinese auction, followed by the live bidding at 1 o’clock. The auction is at the Ellsworth Elks Lodge on High Street this Sunday. Contact the Emmaus Homeless Shelter for details and discounted admission tickets.
Missing Kayaker
(Milbridge) – A Fish and Wildlife officer in the Milbridge area heard the same recording of a Mayday call we played on Star 97-7 yesterday morning and recognized the voice. He called Adrian Cerezo who confirmed that he used a portable marine radio to call for help after he fell from his kayak off Petit Menan, but didn’t think the Coast Guard had heard him. The three mayday calls which lasted all of 10-seconds in total prompted a massive search that the Coast Guard suspended yesterday. Cerezo called the Coast Guard to let them know he was OK, that he had managed to swim to shore on an island and get back to the mainland.
Lightning Safety Week
(Maine) It’s National Lightning Safety Awareness Week. Maine Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Susan Faloon says knowledge is power, and that saves lives. Faloon says Maine has the 6th highest per-capita lightning casualty rate in the US:
Juvenile Incident
(Liberty) – The Waldo County Sheriff’s Department is saying “good doggie”. The department’s new K-9 officer, Dex, got a whiff of a pair of shorts left behind by a 14-year old boy who’d burglarized a camp in Liberty and tracked down the youngsters. He and another teen had run away from New Hampshire school, swiped a car and drove to a relative’s home in Liberty. The two are implicated in several camp breaks. The youngster is now at the juvenile detention center in Charleston.
Lincoln Explosion Fatal
(Lincoln)The State Fire Marshal’s Office says the man killed Wednesday night while mixing up explosives in his basement in Lincoln is 67-year-old Robert Stuart. He died instantly after the blast at his home on Stanhope Mill Road. The State Police bomb team found five IEDs in the basement and exploded them in Stuart’s back yard, along with other bomb making material. Stuart’s wife, Sarah, was home at the time of the explosion and called first responders. She told investigators that her husband told her he’d been making the devices to blow up tree stumps. The FBI has been called in to help track down where a Lincoln man obtained the explosives that killed him.
Worms & Drugs
(Lamoine) A couple of worm diggers reported for trespassing wound up in the Hancock County Jail for other reasons. The Sheriff’s Department reports on Wednesday a deputy and Marine Patrol Officer responded to a property in Lamoine where they found the two men. 34-year-old John Organes of Milbridge was arrested for violating 3 sets of bail. A pat-down and search of 26-year-old Tamarac MacDonald of Milbridge found him to be in possession of scheduled drugs.
Lyme-Seniors
(Maine) Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that adults over the age of 65 had the highest rate of Lyme disease in Maine last year. The number of reported cases increased for all age groups, but seniors experienced the sharpest increase with more than 400 seniors diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2016.
Sports
The Boston Celtics have picked Duke forward Jayson Tatum with the 3rd pick in the NBA draft last night. Guard Markelle Fultz was the top pick by Philadelphia who traded with the Celtics for the first pick.
The Red Sox will retire David Ortiz’s number 34 tonight before their game with the L-A Angels. The Sox are in a 1st place tie with the Yankee who lost to the Angels last night. Rick Porcello starts for Boston tonight.
The Sea Dogs are home tonight, taking on Harrisburg.
