Car Fire Death
(Orrington) – Maine’s medical examiner is using DNA evidence to try to identify a woman found dead in a burned out car in Orrington. A passing motorist spotted the flames at about 3:30 Sunday morning on the Swett’s Pond road. An Orrington woman owns the car. State Police spokesman Steve McCausland tells Star 97.7 the body inside was burned beyond recognition. The Fire Marshal’s office and state police are working together on the case.
Thunderstorms
(Bangor) – Heavy thunderstorms last evening knocked power out to more than 4-thousand Emera Maine customers. As of early this morning more than 26-hundred remained without electricity. Emera Maine spokesman Bob Potts reports to Star 97.7 that the bulk of the outages are reported in the Milo and Mattawamkeag areas. Potts says linemen are working to get the power back on today.
Bar Harbor Vote
(Bar Harbor) – Bar Harbor voters have a lot of work to do just to fill out the local town meeting ballot today. Besides selecting three town councilors, thirteen ordinance questions face voters, including competing questions having to do with cruise ships. The Planning Board favors changing zoning restrictions at the former Blue Nose Ferry terminal which could eventually lead to piers to accommodate cruise ships and significantly cut the number of tender boats ferrying passengers ashore. The Warrant Committee opposes the zoning change, but favors a new ordinance placing caps on cruise ships. Both sides have waged significant media campaigns in local media, including Star 97.7. It’s unclear what happens if both articles win approval.
State Bond Issue
(Augusta) – Election officials expect low turnout statewide as voters decide just one statewide ballot question. It’s a job growth $50-million dollar bond which would invest in companies that can promise immediate, higher paying jobs. No organized campaign either for or against the question has emerged in the days leading up to the election today. Local ballots are likely to draw more voters – most communities decide whether the school budgets passed at either town meeting or town / city council levels should get final approval. Several communities also elect local officials and decide other issues today.
Knowlton Park
(Ellsworth) – Knowlton Park in Ellsworth is closed today while the city’s public works crew spreads out 60-yards of wood chips around the playground areas. The police department said that changes the original plan which would have closed the popular park for 3-to-4 days. The park is expected to reopen Wednesday.
Moose Permit Lottery
(Maine) The drawing for Maine’s moose permit lottery is this Saturday. From a pool of more than 54-thousand applicants, the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife says 2-thousand-80 names will be drawn in the random chance lottery this Saturday at the Caribou Wellness Center in Aroostook [uh ROO stick] County. Festivities start at 9:30AM with local vendors offering everything from guided hunting trips to handmade crafts and goods. The actual lottery drawing begins at 2 and lasts 3 or 4 hours. Maine’s moose hunt is designed to manage the moose population and limit the number of moose-vehicle accidents.
Dogs in Hot Cars
(Local) Dogs in hot cars often cause heated discussions on social media after someone sees a dog sitting in a car on a day like Monday then posts about it. Ellsworth police detective Dotty Small says you can avoid all of this by leaving your dog at home. Small says if you’re concerned about an animal you see in a car, call police – you are NOT allowed to break the car window and could be criminally liable if you do.
Barn Fire
(Rockland) A barn fire threatened a densely populated residential neighborhood in Rockland’s south end. Firefighters from Rockland and surrounding communities battled smoke and flames on Pacific Street Monday afternoon in 90-degree temperatures. Village Soup dot Com reports the homeowner got a car out of the barn but the vehicle was damaged. The barn was destroyed and two homes located just feet away suffered damage. Improper storage of oil soaked rags may have caused the blaze.
Drowning Victim ID’d
(Fort Fairfield) Game Wardens say a 14-year old boy drowned while swimming with friends in Fort Fairfield. A warden recovered Jacob Williams’s body Saturday evening, but emergency personnel could not revive him. The teen was swimming with 3 friends where a brook meets the Aroostook River. The Medical Examiner’s Office has deemed the incident an accidental drowning.
Suspect Sought
(Augusta) Augusta police are still searching for a man who allegedly stabbed someone Sunday. Detective Sgt Jason Cote reports the incident happened around 6 in the evening on Stewart Lane. The victim was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The suspect is described as a male in his 40’s or 50’s wearing a black t-shirt, black pants, sandals with white socks and a black baseball cap. The investigation continues.
Planned Outages
(MDI) Emera Maine customers along Eden Street-Route 3 in Bar Harbor have been notified they’ll experience power outages periodically throughout the week as Emera works on the electrical system. Spokeswoman Judy Long says the affected area is from Prospect Avenue north to the Bar Harbor Motel. Emera is trying to minimize outage times but says performing the work this month helps to avoid affecting customers and businesses during the peak season in July and August.
Driver Found
(Shapleigh) A West Newfield man who allegedly crashed into another car in Shapleigh and fled the scene faces numerous charges. 30-year-old Brandon Gilpatrick reportedly crossed the centerline on Back Road on Saturday and struck a woman’s car causing injury to her and her child. A trooper and K9 tracked nearly 2-miles from the crash site where York County deputies detained a man matching Gilpatrick’s description. Along the way the K9 also found a duffel bag belonging to Gilpatrick containing heroin. He’s charged with Operating After Suspension, Driving to Endanger, Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Accident, Unlawful Possession of Drugs, and more charges are pending.
