Porn Plea
(Bangor) – A convicted sex offender from Dover Foxcroft faces at least 10-years in prison and up to 20-years after pleading guilty to possessing child porn. The US Attorney’s office tells Star 97.7 that William Oliver had a previous child molestation conviction in Georgia and failed to register as a sex offender. He sent child porn pictures to an undercover agent posing as a 14-year old girl in Texas via text message and arranged a meeting when he was arrested. The 53-year old appeared in Bangor Federal Court yesterday.
Oxycodone Sentence
(Bangor) – A Norridgewock man will spend 4-years in prison for selling oxycodone to an undercover drug agent. Judge John Woodcock sentenced 21-year old Bandon Lancaster yesterday. Woodcock called Lancaster a traitor to his community, and said that individuals who get involved in the drug trade are dancing with the devil.
Bar Harbor Parking Meters
(Bar Harbor) – No new parking meters for Downtown Bar Harbor – for now. Voters at this week’s annual open town meeting defeated a measure to borrow money to install so-called smart meters. It lost by just 4-votes. The Mt. Desert Islander reports backers felt the new meter system would generate revenue, but would not add any additional parking spaces to already cramped downtown areas. Opponents said the parking plan still includes a proposed parking garage.
Project Hope
(Ellsworth) Drug addicts ready to kick the habit and start a new life can still seek help from the Ellsworth Police Department. Detective Dotty Small says addicts can surrender their drugs without fear of arrest, and begin on the road to recovery. Project Hope operates each Tuesday from 8AM to 4PM at the Ellsworth Police Department.
Winterport Fatal ID
(Winterport) – Deputies have released the Bangor man’s name who died in a single vehicle crash in Winterport this week. Waldo County Sheriff Jeffrey Trafton said 21-year old Blaze McQuate died after the Life Flight helicopter flew him to Eastern Maine Medical Center Tuesday night. They’re still investigating but say speed and alcohol played a part in the crash.
Bucksport Death Not Suspicious
(Bucksport) Police say there are no suspicious circumstances about a man’s death in Bucksport. WABI-TV reports a neighbor found 72-year-old Richard Newbegin dead in the road near his cabin on Grant Lane around 6 o’clock Wednesday evening. The medical examiner will try to determine how Newbegin died, but authorities don’t suspect foul play.

(E Machias) A Washington Academy science teacher is in Sweden for the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization’s 34th annual meeting. Downeast Salmon Federation Board Vice President Don Sprangers is representing the Federation as part of the conservation hatchery and education action group. This trip builds upon Sprangers’s work with high school students both in East Machias and abroad with Washington Academy by way of the Atlantic Salmon Conservation Schools Network.
Elver Synopsis
(Local) Maine’s elver fishing season wrapped up Wednesday raking in more than $12-Million-dollars. The Department of Marine Resources reports as of Monday fishermen missed their 9-thousand-6-hundred-16-pound quota by about 330-pounds. The average price per pound this season was just over 13-hundred dollars.
Ladyslipper Walk & Talk
(Blue Hill) It’s pollination month for the showiest orchid in the Eastern US. Blue Hill Heritage Trust’s outreach director Chrissy Allen says you can get a glimpse of the rare Ladyslipper during Monday’s event.
Festival Grant
(Bucksport) Free workshops and classes for all ages will be offered during the 3rd annual Bucksport Arts Festival thanks to a grant. Maine Community Foundation’s Hancock County Fund awarded 23-hundred-dollars to Main Street Bucksport to add a free educational component to the festival, happening August 12th on the Bucksport Waterfront.
