South Thomaston Fatal
(South Thomaston) – Investigators say speed and alcohol are likely factors in a fatal crash in Knox County. The Sheriff’s Department reports to Star 97.7 that 21-year old Zachary Elwell of St. George died when he flew out of a vehicle that rolled over on Route 131 in South Thomaston. Witnesses say that car passed another vehicle at a high rate of speed, hit trees and rolled over several times. The driver, 19-year old Kelsey Campbell of South Thomaston, sustained minor injuries.
School Theft
(Holden) – Prosecutors say the former business manager for the school system covering Holden, Eddington and Clifton skimmed lunch money to the tune of more than $100-thousand dollars for 5-and-a-half years. A grand jury agreed there is enough evidence to charge 56-year old Yvonne Mitchell with theft. The Bangor Daily News reports the school system’s insurance company reimbursed the system more than $120-thousand dollars for the missing funds. Mitchell faces up to 10-years in prison if convicted.
Downeast Prison
(Machiasport) – The Downeast Correction Facility’s planned closure next month might not happen after all. The Bangor Daily News reports Governor Paul LePage is likely to add funding to his budget to keep the Buck’s Harbor prison open for at least another 9-months. The 46-workers at the minimum security prison got layoff notices last week. The state has started looking into commuting prison sentences for many inmates or transferring them to other facilities.
Trenton – Yard Sales
(Trenton) – If you hold a yard sale in Trenton, you’ll need to get a permit first. Voters this week opted to keep two provisions in their local land use ordinance requiring permits for yard sales, and setting standards for parking and traffic flow at such sales. The Ellsworth American reports some voters tried to eliminate the requirements for yard sales from the ordinance, but that effort failed at the annual town meeting.
Murder Verdict upheld
(Augusta) – An Aroostook County man’s murder conviction will stand. Maine’s Supreme Court ruled there was plenty of evidence to convict Jesse Marquis of stabbing and shooting his former girlfriend at point blank range. Marquis argued that the superior court judge erred in giving jurors instruction about self defense, and allowing pictures of the victim entered as evidence. In its 19-page opinion the high court said the lower court did not make an error.

Kidnap & Rape
(Lewiston) A Rumford man is held for allegedly forcing a woman into his car and sexually assaulting her. Police tell the Bangor Daily News 41-year-old Joshua Brown approached a woman he didn’t know on Lisbon Street in Lewiston around 4AM Wednesday. Brown made the victim get in his car where the crime took place. She was later able to distance herself from Brown and call police. The investigation continues.

(Maine) The Maine House gave its initial approval this week to bills exempting diapers and feminine hygiene products from the state sales tax.
