Fatal Fire
(Union) – There’s too much damage to one of Union’s oldest houses to determine how a fire started early yesterday morning. The homeowner perished in the blaze. Firefighters pulled 80-year old Lawrence Dries’s body from a first floor bathroom. The 9-1-1 call came in around quarter to two yesterday morning. The Fire Marshal’s office reports to Star 97-7 that Dries was the long-time manager of the JJ Newberry store in Rockland.
Bar Harbor Parking
(Bar Harbor) – Free parking in Downtown Bar Harbor could become a thing of the past starting in the summer of 2018. Planners are talking about a $400-thousand dollar plan to install parking meters that would come out during the off season. The Mt. Desert Islander reports none attending a recent meeting about parking seemed upset about the idea of charging to park. Some of the revenue generated might go toward purchasing more parking areas in the future.
Etna Fire
(Etna) – Six people are homeless after fire gutted a home in Etna. WABI-TV reports firefighters from five communities responded to Old County Road in Etna around 10-o’clock yesterday morning. No one was home, but two pets in the house died in the blaze. The fire marshal’s office will look over the house to try to find the cause.
Brownville Fire
(Brownville) Fire destroyed a Brownville home Wednesday morning. No one was at the Van Horne Avenue residence when 3 area fire departments responded around 7AM yesterday. WABI-TV reports the fire marshal’s office is investigating.
Hospital Dept Closes
(Calais) A decline in births and a nursing staff shortage has led Calais Regional Hospital to close its obstetrics department. Emergency room staff will handle urgent deliveries for expectant mothers who can’t make it to another Washington County hospital. The Bangor Daily News reports no staff layoffs are planned, instead affected staff can relocate to other departments. The OB unit will close next January 1st.
Concert Security
(Bangor) – New security measures are in effect for the Waterfront Concert season in Bangor which starts this weekend. Concert goes will have to walk through metal detectors before entering the outdoor venue. The clear bag policy will also remain in effect. Waterfront Concerts has posted the security policies at their website. The new security plans follow this week’s suicide bombing in Manchester England that killed 22-concert goers as they left a show.
Mayhew Resigns
(Augusta) – Maine’s Health and Human Services Commissioner is leaving her post tomorrow. Governor Paul LePage says Mary Mayhew has resigned from her post. In a press release sent to Star 97.7, LePage had high praise for Mayhew who has served as commissioner of Maine’s largest government agency for most of LePage’s time as Governor. It’s not clear what her plans are, though she’s mentioned as a possible gubernatorial candidate for the 2018 election.
Man Safe
(Bristol) – Game wardens say an 82-year old Bristol man is safe after he went missing Tuesday night. They found Willem Jansen of Round Pond early Wednesday morning in shallow water in the woods about a quarter mile off the road. Jansen suffers from Alzheimer’s Disease. Game Wardens used search dogs to help find Jansen who had gone out for a walk on Tuesday afternoon. His wife reported him missing Tuesday evening.
Retail Pot Ordinance
(Milbridge) Milbridge is the latest town in Maine to place an ordinance prohibiting retail marijuana establishments and social clubs. Voters approved the measure Tuesday during the annual Milbridge town meeting.
Town Meeting
(Stockton Springs) Citizens in Stockton Springs are invited to a meeting at the town office this evening to learn more about school costs and possible options for Stockton Springs’ residents. Last month voters chose to close the Stockton Springs elementary school. The Superintendents from RSU 20 & 25 will attend tonight’s 6 o’clock meeting to answer questions.
Planned outage
(Deblois) Emera Maine plans an outage for a section of Deblois this morning. Spokeswoman Judy Long says areas affected are Hatchery Road and all side roads off Hatchery Road. Work on the electrical system begins around 9AM and should last about 2-and-a-half hours.
School Trip
(Otis) A creative team from Beech Hill School in Otis competes this week at Destination Imagination’s Global Finals in Knoxville Tennessee. Seven local team members, ages 11 to 13, advanced to the finals after achieving honors in the regional and state academic tournaments. Students are required to apply science, technology, engineering and math skills in addition to their talent and teamwork to approach several open-ended challenges.
Patrols MD Weekend
(Maine) Maine law enforcement agencies will be out in force this holiday weekend in an effort to reduce crash fatalities and injuries. Extra patrols will look for impaired, distracted, or aggressive drivers along with enforcing Maine’s seat belt and child safety seat laws. The Chief of the State Police, Colonel Robert Williams, says Memorial Day weekend sets the tone for the rest of the season and the goal of state police is to make it a safe one. State police and 44 other Maine police departments are sharing more than 3-hundred-13-thousand-dollars in federal funds to pay for overtime. So far this year 46 people have died on Maine roads, compared to 48 deaths at this time last year.
