Mt. Desert Fire
(Mt. Desert) – Firefighters on Mt. Desert Island report a building fire near Somes Pond in Mt. Desert. Dispatchers got a call shortly before 6-o’clock this morning from a person across the pond who spotted the flames. It’s not clear what was on fire, but responding firefighters reported a building fully ablaze.
Hancock – Pot Vote
(Hancock) – A retail recreational marijuana sales ban in Hancock will wait until the state sets its rules for selling pot. Voters at the annual town meeting this week opted to table the proposed ordinance to allow for wholesale and retail sales of marijuana. Delay supporters said passing the ordinance could take away a money making opportunity. The state has until next February to come up with rules for legal pot sales.
Old Town Fire
(Old Town) – A dog and some chickens died in a fire in Old Town yesterday. WVII-TV reports a man doing tree work a few houses away spotted the smoke on Bradbury Street and alerted the fire department. No one was home. Authorities say they’re not sure exactly what caused the fire, but noted a heat lamp was in use.
Maine Maritime Cruise
(Castine) – Friends and family waved good-bye to the Training Ship State of Maine as a tug boat pulled it out of Castine’s harbor yesterday. The ship with about 200-students and 100-faculty aboard will spend 90-days at sea, stopping in New York, South Carolina, Ireland and Spain. The voyage is part of the required curriculum for freshmen and juniors at the school.
17th Meth Bust
(Edinburg) – The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency’s latest meth lab bust comes in a remote Penobscot County town and involves a repeat offender. Public Safety Department spokesman Steve McCausland reports to Star 97.7 that agents charged 49-year old Eugene Pomeroy with aggravated Meth Lab operation. Drug agents arrested Pomeroy last summer for running a meth lab. The bust this week was the 17th so far this year.
Baby Death
(Raymond) – Maine’s Medical Examiner awaits test results on a toddler’s body to find out how the little boy died. Foster parents Teresa and Kent Sadak had put Travis Weston down for a nap in a crib but he never woke up. The baby has suffered from ear infections and was on medication. State Police tell Star 97.7 the foster parents have cooperated with detectives.
Carfentanil Death
(Augusta) The powerful synthetic opiate carfentanil has claimed a life in Maine. The state attorney general’s office says the death happened last month in York County. The drug is used by veterinarians to tranquilize elephants and other large animals.
Tip Credit
(Augusta) Maine Democrats support a Republican’s bill to tweak the voter-approved minimum wage hike. The Legislature’s Labor Committee voted 11-2 to recommend a bill to once again allow employees to pay below-minimum wages for workers who make up the difference in tips. Last November voters approved an increase in Maine’s minimum wage to $12 an hour by the year 2020. Then, the wage would increase according to inflation. Tipped employees’ wages would reach the minimum wage by 2024. The Legislature’s taxation committee voted along party lines on a Republican’s bill to eliminate the 3-percent surtax on portions of individual income above $200,000 that voters passed last November.
Mail Theft Plea
(Augusta) An Augusta woman has admitted to stealing mail while being a US Postal Service employee. The US Attorney’s office reports to Star 97.7 that 26-year-old Amanda Wentzell began working as a postal clerk in Temple Maine in February last year. Months later a local resident complained of gift card not received by the person he mailed it to. An investigation revealed Wentzell had rifled through and opened several other pieces of mail before resigning in August. She faces up to 5-years in prison and a quarter-million-dollar fine when she’s sentenced later.
Anonymous Vandal
(Biddeford) A person who vandalized city property in Biddeford back in the 1970’s has apologized and paid for the damages nearly 40 years later. The anonymous offender sent a $550 money order and a letter to mayor Alan Casavant last week. The Bangor Daily News the person confessed to shattering the door and window at the police station, denting a cruiser, and pulling some fire call boxes at the fire department. Casavant would like to thank the person for making right on their actions after so many years.
Bike Auction
(Bangor) The Bangor police department’s annual Bicycle Auction is Saturday at the Bangor Parks and Rec building on Main Street. The auction preview begins at 8AM to view the bikes up for sale in “as-is” condition. The auction starts at 9 and continues until all bikes are sold. Payment is cash or checks only with a valid ID.
Urchin Harvesting
(Maine) Fishing regulators in Maine are planning to slightly expand the sea urchin harvesting season for the coming year. Maine sea urchins are harvested for roe, which is popular as food in Japan. The urchin industry in the state had a slightly resurgent year in 2016. The fishery was worth $6.6 million, the most since 2003.
