Ellsworth – Motorcycle Crash
(Ellsworth) – A motorcycle that may have traveled too fast for road conditions last evening slammed into a utility pole at the intersection of Franklin and Water Streets in Ellsworth. The 62-year old man operating the bike was not wearing a helmet, and has suffered very serious injuries. An ambulance rushed him from the scene to the Life Flight helicopter landing pad at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. The crash reported shortly before 7-thirty last evening to Ellsworth police who continue to investigate.
Coast Guard Rescue
(Trescott) – The Coast Guard had high praise for a kayaker rescued off Washington County yesterday. The 66-year old man wore a dry suit, had a hand-held marine radio and an emergency position beacon which helped rescuers find him. The kayak overturned at Bailey’s Mistake off Trescott yesterday afternoon. A Coast Guard ship rushed from Eastport and picked up the unnamed kayaker and brought him to shore to an ambulance in Cutler.
Ellsworth Drug Arrests
(Ellsworth) – The drug problem continues in Hancock County, and Friday proved to be a busy one for police. The Ellsworth American reports 31-year old William Dressel became ill at the Hancock County Courthouse from an apparent drug overdose. He was treated and released from the hospital, but charged with violating bail. Police also arrested 24-year old Cassandra Morse of Orland for OUI-Drugs after other motorists reported her vehicle was all over the road. And police charged 18-year old Mike Allen of Ellsworth with OUI-Drugs after his car hit three others at the Mill Mall.
Hudson Fatal
(Hudson) – A 57-year old woman is dead after a weekend car crash in Hudson. The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department says Monique Munson died when her car crashed into a tree on Hudson Hill Road at about noon time on Saturday. Police are reconstructing the crash to try to figure out why Munson’s car went off the road.
Deer Isle/Principals
(Deer Isle) – School leaders in Deer Isle and Stonington will start searching for a pair of administrators after resignations. John Dow, the assistant principal, will become the new principal of schools for Sedgwick Elementary, and Deer Isle/Stonington Elementary principal Carla Magoon says she’s leaving at the end of the school year so she can return to the classroom. The Island Advantages reports that Superintendent of Schools Chris Elkington will start looking for replacements, but called it a concern.
Car Seat Check
(Searsport) The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 3 out of 4 car seats are not installed properly. The Searsport police department is offering a free car-seat check event for parents, grandparents, caregivers. Police ask that you bring your car seat instructions, the owner’s manual for the vehicle and, if possible, the child who will be using the seat to the Public Safety building this Thursday afternoon from 1 to 4.
Dead Body-Arrests
(Old Town) Drug agents arrested 4 people from Old Town after a meth lab explosion Tuesday killed a man. Firefighters were called to an apartment on Brunswick Street and the State Fire Marshal’s Office concluded the fire was a result of a meth lab. Apartment occupants 38-year-old Jason Smith and 31-year-old Carrie Ballanger are charged with operating a meth lab. 47-year-old Don Dube of Glenburn and 36-year-old transient Sue Smith also face charges. Police have not released the name of the man who died but say he was seriously burned and his body was found a short distance from the apartment.
6 Drug Arrests
(Mexico, ME) The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency says 6 men were arrested Friday in the Maine town of Mexico. Three Massachusetts men face drug charges along with 3 Mainers including 30-year-old Joshua Campbell, 32-year-old Glen Lane, and 41-year-old Travis Tidswell all of Mexico. Drug agents and the state police tactical team searched two mobile homes on Chase Avenue and seized heroin, cocaine, crack-cocaine, and drug paraphernalia. All men are expected in court today (5/01).
Drug Leader-Prison
(Bangor) A Corinna man will spend 11 years in prison for leading a drug ring in the Dexter area with his daughter for more than a decade. 59-year-old Roger Belanger was sentenced Friday in federal court in Bangor. Belanger and his daughter Kelli Mujo of Harmony were among 10 people arrested during a raid two years ago. In March Mujo was sentenced to 14-years in prison. Starting in 2002 she frequently traveled to Rhode Island to pick up drugs to bring back and sell in Maine.
Route 3 Detour
(Bar Harbor) – Detours start today on Route 3 in Bar Harbor. The Maine Department of Transportation has posted detour signs to help guide motorists around major reconstruction work. Northbound traffic between Crooked Road and Sandy Point Road is the first to get re-routed during the 2-year long construction project. DOT says the road will become a one-lane road with inbound traffic only allowed, but businesses and residences will remain accessible in the construction zone.
Real ID
(Augusta) Maine will come into compliance with the Real ID Law now that Governor Paul LePage signed the bill Friday. The identification system is designed to help prevent terrorism with its enhanced security measures. But critics say keeping personal information private is a concern. Lawmakers pushed to get Maine in compliancy after determining its citizens wouldn’t be allowed to enter federal buildings without the advanced ID.
King Speaks at HS
(Bucksport) After a few years hiatus, Bucksport High School has decided to bring back a commencement speaker for the graduating class of 2017. The Ellsworth American reports US Senator Angus King will deliver a speech to the 90 students and ceremony attendees on June 9th. Principal Bill Tracey tells the newspaper the students quickly decided King was an excellent choice and the school is truly humbled that he’ll be delivering the commencement address.
Choral Society Conductor
(Local) Acadia Choral Society welcomes a guest conductor for its spring concert series “Rest and Rejoicing”. Douglas Beck has a rich musical background and has directed choirs throughout North America and even Europe. Beck says life itself is the inspiration for music.
