Surry – Recount
(Surry) – When Surry’s voters cast ballots a week ago, they had 3-people to pick from to fill two school board seats. Joan Welgoss received 116 votes, but the second seat saw just a two vote difference between Mary Mitchell with 96 and Marlene Tallent with 94. Town officials recounted the votes last evening – they’ll post the outcome on the town’s website later this morning.
SW Harbor – Suit
(Southwest Harbor) – The Town of Southwest Harbor and a former finance department employee are accusing each other of wrongdoing. The Mt. Desert Islander reports Tabbetha Newenham claims she was underpaid for her last day of work. The town says Newenham padded her vacation time by accessing payroll records, and owes them more than $4-thousand dollars. Newenham filed suit against the town, and the town has accused Newenham of fraud. Newenham left her job just about a year ago.
Brownville PD
(Brownville) – Voters in the small Piscataquis County Town of Brownville meet Monday to see if they’ll do away with the local police department. In March a town meeting cut funding from the police, and WVII-TV reports the town’s cruisers have been parked at the police station, unused since then. The county Sheriff’s Department has provided police protection since the de-funding vote. The first vote is saving the town about $130-thousand dollars a year. Monday’s vote will decide whether to formally eliminate the department.
Drug Take-Back
(Hancock Cty) Hancock County residents are encouraged to safely dispose of any unused or expired medications during National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office is hosting the local event in collaboration with Ellsworth Police Department, Healthy Acadia and the Ellsworth Chamber of Commerce. The service is free and anonymous. Bring your unwanted prescriptions to the Chamber on High Street in Ellsworth tomorrow between 10AM and 2PM. Other participating police departments that are also drop-off locations include Bar Harbor, Bucksport, Mt Desert, Southwest Harbor, and Gouldsboro.
Cleanup Day
(Blue Hill) Volunteers are wanted to help beautify Blue Hill during the 2nd annual “Blue Hill Cares Roadside Cleanup” tomorrow. Participants will meet at Blue Hill Consolidated School at 8AM for coffee, donuts, and to receive your road assignments. Medical staff from BHMH will also be there to share safety tips. Volunteers should wear bright or reflective clothing, durable gloves, and bring a bucket. For details contact Blue Hill Cares community group.
Babysitting Scam
(Local) Ellsworth police say beware of a help wanted ad seeking a Nanny for two young children. In this scam the person offers to pay more than 800-dollars a week and even cover travel costs. The fraudster only communicates by email, then mails you an advanced payment. But right after receiving the check you’re notified that the kids have been killed in a car crash and the parents need their money wired back to them immediately. After doing that, police say you find that the original check was no good and you’re out the money. The scammer also uses stolen credit cards to place the help wanted ads, so police say check your credit card statements faithfully.
Community Closet
(Ellsworth) A yard sale in Ellsworth will benefit a store that provides clothing, household items and toiletries for struggling families. Community Closet director Jacqueline Wycoff says the store relies on donations and fundraisers so that local families only pay what they can afford for the items they need. The Community Closet’s yard sale is tomorrow (4/29) from 9am to 3pm at 25 Eastward Lane in Ellsworth.
DV Suspect
(Lebanon) State police are looking for a Lebanon man who fled the scene of a domestic violence assault early Thursday. Troopers say 52-year-old Dale Godfrey left in his pickup truck, which was later located a few miles away but Godfrey has not been found. The female victim received treatment at a hospital and is back home. State police ask the public to keep an eye out for Godfrey and report any sightings.
Machias Fire
(Machias) – No word on a cause as a vacant home in Machias went up in flames early yesterday morning. Firefighters from four communities got rousted out of bed at 2AM to respond to the burning house on Elm Street. They spent about 4-hours on the scene. No one is hurt.
9th OUI
(Limestone) – A judge is sending an Aroostook County man to jail for 7-years after his 9th drunk driving conviction. last year Mark Burson of Limestone crashed into a police cruiser while he was intoxicated. His blood alcohol level was more than 4-times higher than the illegal limit. The crash occurred in Topsham and the police officer in the car suffered injuries.
Colby-Athletic Center
(Waterville) Officials at a Maine college say they’re planning the school’s biggest project ever – a $2-hundred-million-dollar athletic center that will bring dramatic upgrades, including what they believe to be the state’s first Olympic-sized swimming pool. The Morning Sentinel reports that Colby College president David Greene says prep-work will start this summer and the 3-hundred-50-thousand-square-foot center should be open by 2020.
