Eddington Fire
(Eddington) – No injuries, but the house is a total loss following a weekend fire in Eddington. Firefighters from seven communities responded to Monument Drive around 5-o’clock on Saturday night, finding the house ablaze when they arrived. The homeowner escaped without injury. The fire marshal’s office will try to find the cause today.
Bangor – Apprehension
(Bangor) – The search continues for an accused killer who allegedly pulled the trigger a week ago yesterday in Bangor, but a Lincoln woman is now charged with hindering his apprehension. Bangor police report to Star 97.7 they’ve charged 45-year old Cindy McVicar with hindering apprehension of Antoinne Bethea who goes by the street name of Prince. They’re not saying exactly how McVicar helped Bethea elude capture. He is wanted for shooting his girlfriend’s estranged husband in a dispute on Ohio Street on Easter Sunday.
Heroin Arrest
(Belfast) – A Waldo County man faces drug trafficking charges after police pulled him over initially for a vehicle defect. Belfast Police Sergeant Cody Laite reports to Star 97.7 he and Detective Merle Reed pulled over the car on Lincolnville Avenue late Friday night and discovered 36-year old Jason Roberts of Searsport had 12-grams of heroin with him. He also had $12-hundred dollars in cash.
Goats
(Belfast) – Belfast police have reunited a pair of goats with their owner after the goats got a tour of the city that’s usually reserved for people in handcuffs. Police posted on their Facebook Page yesterday morning that they had a couple of baby goats that they’d picked up while the kids were running loose in the city. They said an officer had them in the back seat of his cruiser and was feeding them veggies. The owner came forward and reclaimed the goats a while later.
Route 1A Holden
(Holden) – It doesn’t take long for traffic on Route 1-A Between Ellsworth and Brewer to back up, especially when there is a bad accident on the road. It happened again last Thursday when an Orland man died in a head on crash with a tractor trailer truck. Holden police chief Chris Greeley tells Star 97-7 the number of serious crashes on the busy road is for a combination of factors.
MEMA Conference
(Augusta) – Even though massive disasters are quite rare in Maine, the state’s Emergency Management Agency is required to plan for the worst. The 9th annual Maine Partners in Emergency Preparedness Conference starts tomorrow. MEMA spokeswoman Susan Faloon says the general public is most welcome to attend. The Preparedness Conference will be at the Augusta Civic Center. Guest speakers include Massachusetts EMA director Kurt Schwartz who will speak on Wednesday about lessons learned following the Boston Marathon bombing.
Missing Man
(Augusta) Augusta police are still looking for a man who was reported missing last month. Lieutenant Christopher Massey tells Star 97-7 they put out a media release on March 13th asking for the public’s help to locate 54-year-old Scott Milliken. Detectives have followed leads during the past 6 weeks, but none of them have led to Milliken’s whereabouts.
Supplying Minors Sentence
(Bangor) – Last summer two Bangor area teens died in a car crash in Glenburn. They’d been drinking, and the young man who bought the booze is going to spend a month and a half in jail. A judge sentenced 22-year old Cornell Martin last week. He’ll also have to serve a year on probation and perform 100-hours of community service. Killed were 18-year old Tyler Babcock and 17-year old Alex Chabre. Another teen provided the house where they were drinking, and he’s charged with a juvenile crime.
Unemployment Rate
(Maine) Workforce conditions in Maine continued to improve in March. Preliminary estimates indicate there was a record number of non-farm and private sector payroll jobs, which drove the unemployment rate to a new low of just 3-percent. The New England unemployment rate averaged 3.8-percent in March.
Unemployment Response
(Orono) The Maine Department of Labor has scheduled a Rapid Response session for workers affected by the layoff at NexxLinx in Orono. Workers who have lost their jobs may be eligible to collect unemployment benefits and for other services. The Rapid Response session will be held Thursday (April 27), at the Tri-County Career Center, on Oak Street in Bangor. Attendees will learn about health insurance options and re-employment assistance, in addition to answering questions about unemployment benefits.
Ice Waterways
(Downeast) Downeast, winter has loosened its grip. The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife says waters in the region are ice-free. Biologist Greg Burr says if you like to fish small ponds for brook trout, you may want to try Witch Hole Pond, Lakewood Pond, and Upper and Lower Breakneck Ponds all in Bar Harbor, Echo Lake in Mount Desert, Simmons Pond in Hancock, Little Pond in Franklin, Young’s Pond in Otis, and Half-mile Pond or Jellison Hill – Amherst.
