Bangor – Homicide
(Bangor) – Police in Bangor say they know who pulled the trigger Sunday afternoon on Ohio Street, and now they are looking for 40-year old Antoine Bethea. The man he allegedly shot, 36 year old Terrence Durel, died Sunday night, and Bethea, who goes by the street name of Prince, is wanted for murder. Police Lieutenant David Bushey reports to Star 97.7 they’ve put up a reward for information that leads to Bethea’s capture.
Surry – Digital Sign
(Surry) – Voters in Surry will decide whether the town ought to replace it’s often hard to reach wooden announcement sign with a digital display. Town meeting is next Monday night, and a $20-thousand dollar budget item would replace the current sign that town staff has to trek through mud and snow to change the letters. The Ellsworth American reports some are opposed to the proposed new sign, saying it would impact the character of the Hancock County town.
Bridge Replacement Delayed
(Tremont) – High bids will mean another year before a bridge in Tremont is replaced. The Clark Bridge near the Tremont Elementary School was supposed to be replaced starting in June. The Mt. Desert Islander reports specifications designed to protect national park property adjacent to the bridge boosted the cost, so it looks like the Maine Department of Transportation will redesign the project and replace the concrete structure in 2018.
Penobscot Narrows Work
(Verona Island) – If you drive across the Penobscot Narrows Bridge on a regular basis, get ready for a longer trip. Maine’s Department of Transportation plans to start work next Monday, beginning with sidewalk repairs. Then in May, the bridge will become one way alternating traffic while they pave the structure. That project is expected to end in June. DOT officials say the wait should only be a few minutes.
Kaufman Race
(Ellsworth) The 10th annual Jerry Kaufman Memorial 5K is this Saturday. Down East Family YMCA fitness director Robin Clarke says the race has been happening years longer, but the name changed about a decade ago. Proceeds benefit the ALS Maine Collaborative, Hancock County Home Care and Hospice, and the YMCA. Register by Friday for a reduced fee and T-shirt. Log on to: DEF YMCA dot Org.
Juvenile Offenders
(Maine) It’s a dramatic drop since 2014; the number of juveniles in detention in Maine is down by 36-percent. University of Southern Maine justice policy associate Erica King says young people diverted from detention are more likely to stay in school, get a job and stay out of the criminal-justice system. King says the progress made in Maine results from lots of cooperation. King says the state has closed and repurposed one of its juvenile facilities; and 79 youngsters are housed at the remaining facility, Long Creek. She says that’s a big improvement, because the capacity for that facility is 163 kids and in the past was overcrowded.
Thank a Lineman
(Bangor) As winter comes to an end and springtime construction projects begin, Emera Maine asks the community to take a moment to help recognize the dedicated team of line workers. Emera spokeswoman Judy Long says each day their line technicians are ready to keep families in northern and eastern Maine safe, warm, and connected to the world. In 2013 the US Senate passed a resolution to designate April 18th as National Linemen Appreciation Day.
Biden in Maine
(Waterville) Former Vice President Joe Biden will deliver Colby College’s commencement address. The May 21st ceremony will be held on the lawn of Miller Library, weather permitting and it’s open to the public. In case of rain, tickets will be required for admission to the gymnasium in the Harold Alfond Athletic Center. The event will be simulcast and available for viewing in the field house.
King-Vet’s Affairs
(Auburn) Independent U.S. Senator Angus King says he will meet with Maine veterans to call for an overhaul of the Department of Veterans Affairs’ appeals process. King says there are more than 450,000 appeals pending nationwide and that the process hasn’t been updated since 1933.
