Snow Storm
(Lamoine) – Electric company linemen have a lot of work ahead of them today. More than 85-hundred outages faced Emera Maine crews early this morning following yesterday’s blizzard that dumped a foot or more of wet, heavy snow on Downeast Maine. The bulk of the outages are along coastal Hancock and Washington Counties. Schools have delayed opening for a couple of hours in Hancock County to give plow crews a chance to scrape down the slush on the roads and parking lots. Police report no serious traffic problems overnight as most folks stayed put.
Bar Harbor Fire
(Town Hill) – At the height of the storm firefighters from at least a half dozen towns scrambled into service to respond to the Town Hill section of Bar Harbor. A small lobster shack restaurant was reported ablaze on Route 102 next to EBS. Dispatchers sent firefighters from Bar Harbor, Mt. Desert, Southwest Harbor, Trenton and Ellsworth to the scene at about 10-o’clock last night. No immediate word on the extent of the damage.
Drug Testing
(Ellsworth) Ellsworth business owners will discuss substance abuse and drug testing in the workplace at a breakfast put on by the Ellsworth Chamber of Commerce. Executive director Gretchen Wilson says with new marijuana laws in effect, many business owners aren’t sure how to approach the subject. The discussion will be led by the Rudman Winchell Employment and Labor Law Team. The breakfast is next Tuesday, March 21st at the Ellsworth city hall auditorium at 8. Contact the Chamber to RSVP.
Food Drive Update
(Hancock) It’s about half-way through the month and the 6th annual Hancock County Food Drive continues through the end of March. Healthy Acadia AmeriCorps Vista Emily Herwerden says there are 139 collection sites throughout Hancock County and it’s easy to get involved. Donations to the Food Drive help support local food pantries, school food programs, and community meal sites across Hancock County.
FBI Reward
(Skowhegan) The FBI is offering a 5-thousand-dollar reward to anyone who helps them identify the man who committed 4 bank robberies in Maine. The FBI refers to the suspect as “The Silent Bandit” because he doesn’t speak during the heists, he just hands the teller a threatening note yet doesn’t display a weapon. The Bangor Daily News reports the man is suspected of robbing Franklin Savings Bank in Skowhegan in December 2012, Key Bank in Waterville in February 2013, Bangor Savings Bank in Pittsfield a year later, and TD Bank in Waterville in February 2015.
Snowmobile Injury
(Frenchville) A Massachusetts man was hospitalized after crashing his snowmobile in Frenchville. Game wardens responded around 9:30 Monday evening to a report of a lost and injured snowmobiler. 52-year-old Todd Malesky of Millbury Massachusetts became separated from his group after crashing his snowmobile. Malesky was able to make it to a residence where an ambulance picked him up and took him to the hospital in Fort Kent. He was then life-flighted to EMMC in Bangor. The incident is still being investigated.
Funds Redistributed
(Maine) More than 1-point-1-million-dollars of criminally forfeited funds will be redistributed to 8 Maine law enforcement agencies on Thursday. The money is being given to agencies involved in the prosecution of Malcolm French, owner of Haynes Timberland Incorporated. Police raided a marijuana grow house owned by French in 2009 and uncovered 8-to-9-million-dollars worth of pot plants. Money will be awarded to the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, Maine State Police, Maine Warden Service, the Washington County Sheriff, and police departments in Brewer, Biddeford, Scarborough and Gorham.
Dog Kicked Off Plane
(Franklin) A blind woman from Maine says she and her service dog were kicked off an American Airlines flight after she requested a different seat. Franklin resident Sue Martin says she, her husband, and her guide dog, Quan, were removed from the plane at Reagan National Airport on March 1. An American Airlines spokeswoman says the airline is investigating the allegations.
Workshop
(Ellsworth) Business workshops continue at the Union River Center for Innovation. The next free seminar will be conducted by Ed Bigney, treasurer and volunteer counselor at SCORE’s Downeast Maine. Bigney will teach how to pitch startup ideas in a clear, concise manner to be taken seriously. The workshop is Thursday, March 16th at 5:30pm in the URCI building on Water Street, adjacent to Harbor Park.
