Winter Storm
(Ellsworth) – If you’ve got school aged kids, they’re coming home from school early today. Most school districts are dismissing around mid-day as a winter storm is bearing down on Maine. National Weather Service lead forecaster Bob Oravec says it’s a powerful nor’easter and will dump up to 16-inches in Maine. Blizzard warnings are up for major population centers in New York and Boston, and Connecticut’s Governor has shut down the roads for the day.
Land Preservation
(Sullivan) – A good chunk of Hog Bay in Sullivan will remain in its natural state thanks to donations to the Frenchman Bay Conservancy. The Ellsworth American reports the US Fish and Wildlife service has donated $100-thousand dollars to the Conservancy to protect a mile and a half of shore line from development. Several land owners are donating permanent conservation easements in an area known as a major wading bird habitat.
East Millinocket Fire
(East Millinocket) – Firefighters in East Millinocket and other towns contained a blaze in the former paper mill in town. WABI-TV reports the fire apparently started in a piece of equipment inside the mill complex which is undergoing demolition. Heavy, black smoke was coming from the mill when the call came in around 6:30 last night. No injuries are reported, and the fire was under control in about 3-hours.
Stockton Springs Assault
(Stockton Springs) – A 70-year old Stockton Springs man is held without bail after an assault left his girlfriend hospitalized. The Waldo County Sheriff’s Department tells Star 97.7 they arrested David Pattershall of the Pout Town Road early Sunday morning. He allegedly kicked and strangled the woman and threatened to kill her with a knife. Pattershall is charged with aggravated assault and terrorizing.
Missing Man
(Augusta) – A 54-year old Augusta man is missing and police have asked the public to help find him. Deputy Chief Jared Mills reports to Star 97.7 that Scott Milliken was supposed to meet a friend on March 2nd but never showed for the meeting. Milliken left a cell phone at his Water Street home and has not been seen for 12-days.
Benefit Concert
(Trenton) A concert to benefit two addiction recovery centers is happening at Acadia Events Center on the Bar Harbor Road in Trenton. Arise Addiction Recovery director Paul Trovarello says admission is free but donations are accepted at the door on March 25th. The concert is 4 to 8PM with concessions and testimonials from recovering addicts who have had success in treatment programs. Get more details at: Arise Addiction Recovery dot Com.
Fire Contained
(Sullivan) A homeowner in Sullivan has been warned for improper disposal of stove ashes after fire crews responded to the property Monday. Maine Forest Rangers say the fire on Tunk Lake Road was held to less than an acre by firefighters. No structures were damaged and no injuries reported.
Home Invasion
(Sidney) Two men are hospitalized following a home invasion in Sidney. Police tell WABI-TV it happened around 7 o’clock Sunday night on Lyons Road. The 84-year-old homeowner says a man knocked on her door and asked to use the phone, then forced his way in. The suspect was identified as Dreaquan Foster of Rhode Island. Police say before Foster could enter the bedroom the homeowner’s son, 47-year-old Eric Hewett, shot him. Hewett was taken to the hospital with a head injury. Foster is receiving treatment for a gunshot wound to his chest. The investigation continues.
Emera Prepares
(Eastern ME) With forecasters predict more than a foot of new snow in some parts of Maine, Emera Maine’s Storm Response Team is preparing for possible power outages. The storm is expected to impact Emera Maine’s service territory today and into tomorrow. Advance preparations include ensuring appropriate staffing levels both in the field and in the Customer Contact Center, fueling up trucks, snow sleds and ATV’s, stocking up on storm kits and other supplies for field crews, and more. Spokesman Bob Potts says the Storm Response Team will continue to monitor the storm’s track and modify staffing plans as needed.
Aggravated Assault
(Friendship) A man from Friendship was held at the Knox County Jail for beating up another man and breaking several bones in his face. The Knox County Sheriff’s Office reports deputies were called to Maine General Hospital around 5AM Sunday to speak with the victim, who said he confronted 19-year-old Travis Reed for things Reed was saying about him. That’s when Reed began punching the victim in the face repeatedly in front of witnesses. Because of the severity of the injuries, Reed is charged with Felony Aggravated Assault. Deputies got a warrant for his arrest and tracked him down later that day.
Child Endangerment Arrest
(Waldoboro) A Waldoboro woman faces two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child for allegedly driving drunk while the kids were in the backseat. The Knox County Sheriff’s Department reports they received a complaint of an erratic driver Saturday night. The caller said the car was in Warren headed toward Waldoboro. A deputy located the car and pulled over 31-year-old Brandi Griffin. She failed a field sobriety test and was taken to the Knox County Jail. Griffin also faces charges of Operating Under the Influence, Violating Release Conditions, and Unlawful Possession of a Schedule “Z” drug.
OUI Crash-Arrest
(Dedham) Deputies in Hancock County responding to complaint of a possible drunk driver got to the scene shortly after the vehicle in question had crashed. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office reports they dispatched a deputy after receiving a call about an erratic driver Sunday on Main Road in Dedham. As a result of the investigation Cynthia Carter of Sedgwick was arrested for Operating Under the Influence.
Fire Injury
(Auburn) An Auburn woman was critically burned while smoking on oxygen Monday morning. Fire Marshal Investigators say 57-year old Catherine Swidzinski is listed in critical condition at Maine Medical Center. The fire was reported about 8 yesterday morning in her apartment on Turner Street. There was minor fire damage to the apartment.
Domestic Arrest
(Bangor) A Bangor man made his first court appearance Monday after an early morning arrest on a host of domestic violence charges. The Bangor Police Department reports officers responded to a woman’s 911 call around 1AM. She said a verbal argument with her husband turned into a physical altercation. Police arrested 40-year old Ryan Witmer at the scene and charged him with numerous domestic violence crimes. Witmer has a previous high profile domestic violence arrest but was acquitted several years ago, claiming he stabbed another man in self defense. The victim did not require medical attention.
Reusable Bags
(Ellsworth) Ellsworth Hannaford shoppers are encouraged to buy reusable bags because it not only helps the environment but during the month of March, Families First Community Center will receive $1 from each bag purchased at the High Street location. The bags can be found at various registers and feature a good karma message. Families First Community Center says their goal is to sell 500 bags, the equivalent to raising $500 to help them carry out their mission and spread awareness about their cause within the community.
