Protection order extended
(Ellsworth) – Singer songwriter Don McLean’s ex-wife received a 2-year extension on a protection order against him. The Bangor Daily News reports Patricia McLean, who now lives in Castine, obtained the protection order against the American Pie singer after an assault last year. McLean pled guilty in July to domestic violence assault and other charges. The couple lived in Camden at the time.
Tow Truck Driver Rescue
(Steuben) – A Milbridge volunteer firefighter and tow truck driver is shrugging off being called a hero after rescuing two men from a burning vehicle in Steuben. It happened Monday. WABI-TV reports Chris Rolfe and his father saw the van go off the road and went to assist the occupants when the vehicle started smoking. They got both people out of the van and called 9-1-1.
Lamoine Town Meeting
(Lamoine) – Voters in Lamoine debated whether the town should install an electronic sign at the community’s town office. After a debate over whether it would change the character of the town, a proposal to cut $20-thousand dollar in planned funding failed, and Selectmen will work in the next year to construct a sign to give motorists driving by messages about upcoming events. The budget approved last night was up about 9-percent, much of it due to increased road paving and expected increased trash disposal costs.
Body Found
(Sanford) – Police have found a missing Sanford woman’s body a few hundred yards from a convenience store where she was last seen in January. Police and Game Wardens located Kerry Rear off Route 109 in her home town. She disappeared January 22nd. Witnesses said she appeared intoxicated and was barefoot when she came into the store. The recent snow melt assisted searchers who had used tracking dogs numerous time to hunt for the missing 40-year old.
Belfast – GA
(Belfast) – The City of Belfast will receive about half what it should have from the state’s Department of Health and Human Services after an audit of its welfare program. Village Soup dot-com reports general assistance expenditures rose by $290-thousand dollars in 2015 prompting the audit. The state concluded the city was not properly screening assistance applications. The state will reimburse the city just under $125-thousand dollars. City officials say they’ve taken steps to correct program deficiencies.
Manslaughter Charge
(Ellsworth) – Deputies have charged a Castine man with manslaughter and OUI after an accident last fall. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department tells Star 97.7 that 55-year old Francis Spinazola was behind the wheel when his vehicle left the road, throwing 56-year old Ronald Bakeman to his death. Neither Bakeman, Spinazola, or another person in the vehicle wore seat belts. Spinazola will appear in court next month.
Intruder Shot
(RIchmond) – Police have jailed a Richmond man shot after he broke into a neighboring apartment. They say 42-year old Shad Hembree suffered a gunshot wound when the neighbor shot him twice after telling him to leave. The shooter will not face charges. Hembree is charged with burglary. Relatives say he suffers from a mental illness.
Ugly Produce
(Belfast) The saying goes “we eat with our eyes”, but 15 Hannaford stores in Maine are challenging that with a pilot program that sells ugly produce. Assistant Produce Manager at the Belfast Hannaford, Aaron Cunningham tells Star 97.7, the misfit produce had been flying off the shelves. Most of the Hannaford stores participating in the Misfit Produce program are in southern Maine. The other closest stores to us are in Rockland, Camden, and Damariscotta.
Monument Challenged
(Portland) A coalition of commercial fishing groups has filed a lawsuit to challenge the creation of a national monument off the coast of New England. President Barack Obama created the monument in September using executive authority under the Antiquities Act. Fishing groups filed their lawsuit Tuesday in federal court.
Pilot School
(Trenton) The next Pilot Ground School is scheduled for March 20th at the Bar Harbor Airport in Trenton. The 12-week program prepares pilots for the FAA Private Pilot Knowledge Exam. It’s also recommended for pilots who haven’t attend a Ground School for several years as many of the regulations have changed. To register or get more information contact Maine Coastal Flight.
Reese Appeal
(Augusta) – A convicted killer in one of Maine’s more notorious murders will not get a new trial for having an ineffective attorney. Olland Reese killed 16-year old Cody Brown in 2002 in Brunswick. He claimed several other people had reason to kill the teen, but prosecutors rejected the alternative suspects. Reese has twice asked the state supreme court to order a new trial because of ineffective counsel. The high court ruled this week the verdict will stand. Reese is serving 47-years in prison following his conviction in 2005.
