Lamoine – Pot Vote
(Lamoine) – A very low voter turnout yesterday in Lamoine saw those who cast ballots overwhelmingly pass a ban on selling and commercially growing recreational marijuana. The final vote tally was 78-to-29 in favor of the ordinance that prohibits retail recreational pot sales. Several communities across Maine are considering a similar ordinance crafted by the Maine Municipal Association following last fall’s statewide vote that legalized recreational marijuana on a state level. Pot is still illegal under federal law.
Cruise Ship Petition
(Bar Harbor) – Bar Harbor voters may get to decide whether they should be the ones to say how many cruise ships can dock at one time, and how many passengers can come ashore. More than 400-people signed a petition asking the town council to put forward a town meeting question asking whether it ought to be town councilors or voters who decide on cruise ship caps. Town councilors are considering whether to place the question on June’s town meeting ballot.
Searsport Vote
(Searsport) – A write-in candidate who received just 8-votes may be the newest director on the RSU 20 school committee in Searsport. Balloting yesterday saw write-in Josh Treat gather the most vote, two ahead of other write-in candidates. Two incumbents won re-election as Selectmen. Dick Desmarais and Jack Merrithew outpolled challenger Meredith Ares in yesterday’s voting.
Bangor Robbery
(Bangor) – Police in Bangor arrested a 26-year old woman, charging her with robbery for an incident where she held people at gunpoint this week and demanded money. Charged is 26-year old Sabrina Cummings who officers describe as a transient. The Bangor Daily News reports she confronted a group of people at a Union Street building and ordered them not to leave.
Bath Salts Dealer Sentenced
(Bangor) – A confessed drug dealer from Aroostook county will spend more than 6-years in federal prison. The US Attorney’s Office reports to Star 97.7 a federal judge sentenced 35-year old Nathan Brewer to 73-months in prison for selling bath salts during a 2-year span. The Presque Isle man pled guilty more than two years ago. Prosecutors say he pooled money with other people to order bath salts over the Internet.
Meth Bust
(Sanford) A teenager and his uncle face drug charges after a neighbor called police about a noxious odor coming from the apartment next door. Sanford police responded to a Charles Street apartment building Sunday night. They called in the meth lab response team which found meth-making evidence. The team cleared out the residence Monday. A few hours later Sanford Police were called to an adjacent property for a suspicious duffle bag outside. Police found it contained ingredients to make meth and a plastic bottle used to cook it. Drug agents are now investigating whether it belonged to the two men. Arrested are 18-year-old Tanner Winship of Sanford along with his uncle, 40-year-old Herbert Winship who was wanted by State Police on unrelated charges. The elder Winship ran when police showed up; he’s now also charged with resisting arrest.
Feeding Birds
(Local) Spring isn’t here just yet and feeding the birds during the winter is an enjoyable hobby for lots of folks. In addition to feeding the birds, Birdsacre president Grayson Richmond says to improve the overall health of birds it’s important to keep feeders clean. Richmond says bird feeders also help owls because seed that falls on the ground attracts mice, putting the rodents in plain sight for owls to catch.
Boat Sinker Sentenced
(St. George) – A 22-year old St. George man who helped to sink a rival’s lobster boat in Tenant’s Harbor will spend a couple years in prison and has to help pay for the damage. WABI-TV reports Vincent Hilt is one of three people accused of sinking the boat last September. Devin Mecklin got a 3-month sentence and Alan Norwood is due in court in May. Hilt pled guilty to aggravated criminal mischief and theft in connection with the sinking.
Man Punches Woman
(Swanville) Belfast police responded to a home Sunday where the caller reported a friend showed up covered in blood and said he’d been in a fight. Police talked to the complainant and 37-year-old Scott Moores of Swanville. Police and deputies from the Waldo County Sheriff’s Department investigated, finding Moores had been at a residence in Swanville with the alleged victim. The victim had a protection order prohibiting Moores have contact with her. But that didn’t stop Moores from allegedly punching her in front of witnesses. Moores prevented witnesses from calling police. He’s been arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault, Obstructing the report of a Crime, and Violating a Protection Order. Moores is being held without bail until he’s arraigned.
Lady Stabs Boyfriend’s Butt
(Swanville) An altercation at a Swanville home sent a man to the hospital with stab wounds to his rear end. The Waldo County Sheriff’s Office reports Belfast police went to a Swan Lake Avenue home Sunday for the domestic incident. They tried to arrest 26-year-old Michelle Sheaffer, but she physically resisted arrest and bit an officer’s hand. Waldo County deputies determined Sheaffer had been in an argument with family members and her boyfriend before stabbing him with a kitchen knife. The victim was treated at the hospital and released. Sheaffer’s charged with Aggravated Assault, Assault, and Resisting Arrest.
Mr. Bucksport
(Bucksport) The 17th annual Mr. Bucksport competition returns. High School boys will vie for the title on March 18th at 6PM in the high school gymnasium. The Bangor Daily News reports proceeds from this year’s contest will benefit Bucksport Outing Club, which takes students to visit national parks all over the country.
Bus-Car Crash
(Lebanon) An 80-year-old bus driver who failed to come to a complete stop at an intersection in Lebanon will not face charges after colliding with a car. Trooper John Darcy tells Star 977 the crash happened before 8AM Tuesday on Center Road. Bus driver Roberta Sanborn was transporting one child and an adult, none of them were injured. 20-year-old John Izzarelli of Lebanon was driving the car that got hit and he was taken to a Sanford hospital with minor injuries. State police say Sanborn will not be cited with any violations.
Hermit Book
(Waterville) A book released Tuesday tells the story of the man known as the North Pond Hermit. While living in the woods for 27 years Christopher Knight is believed to have committed hundreds of burglaries to gather food and supplies. Knight went into the woods in 1986 and settled into a camp two years later until the camp was discovered in 2013. WABI-TV reports the book’s author, Michael Finkel will appear at a reception on Thursday at Waterville City Hall, then immediately afterward he’ll conduct a presentation at the Waterville Opera House. The book entitled “The Stranger In The Woods” sells for around $15.
