Drug Bust
(Sullivan) – Drug agents say they’ve taken five dealers off the rural roads of Hancock County this week. The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency tells Star 97-7 they searched a home on Taunton Drive in Sullivan and found $63-hundred dollars in cash and evidence of heroin and crack cocaine dealing. Two men from the Bronx, New York are under arrest as are three locals, including 32-year old Sherman Merchant and 30-year old Jade Giger of Gouldsboro and 39-year old Matthew Liese. The locals who all have extensive criminal records, were arrested on various warrants and bail violation charges.
Social Security Fraud
(Bangor) – A Washington County man has admitted he collected $157-thousand dollars in Social Security Disability benefits when he had no right to. The US Attorney’s office tells Star 97-7 that 54-year old Daniel Fitzsimmons of Whiting collected disability payments from SSDI between 2002 and 2013. While he claimed that he earned very little income, he actually worked as a commercial fisherman. He’ll be sentenced later, facing a quarter million dollar fine and up to 5-years in prison.
Oxy Plea
(Bangor) – A man who sold 11-oxycodone pills to an undercover drug agent in Pittsfield has admitted that he did it. The US Attorney’s office tells Star 97-7 that Brandon Lancaster faces up to 20-years in prison and a $1-million dollar fine. The 21-year old from Norridgewock entered the guilty plea in Bangor federal court yesterday. Once he’s out of prison, he could spend the rest of his life on supervised release.
I295 Speed Limit
(Augusta) – If you travel between Augusta and Portland at all, get ready for a slightly slower ride. The Department of Transportation will lower the speed limit on Interstate 295 from 70-miles an hour to 65. The DOT reports to Star 97-7 the lower speed limit is designed to make the road safer and give drivers more time to react to emergencies on the highway. State Police chief Robert Williams says the stretch of road has seen an increased number of crashes and that results in secondary crashes and slower traffic overall. The speed limit change takes place on March 27th.
Tire Warehouse
(Ellsworth) – Apparently Ellsworth needs another auto parts store and tire dealer. The Ellsworth American reports that Tire Warehouse will open in the former Carquest Auto Parts building at the High Street and Downeast Highway triangle. It’s not clear when the business will open. That will make at least a half dozen car parts stores and three tire stores all within a mile of each other in Ellsworth.
