Post Office Fire
(Winthrop) – A heating unit located in the ceiling at the post office in Winthrop may be to blame for yesterday’s fire that destroyed the facility and the mail inside. Firefighters rushed to the scene when smoke started coming from the ceiling – the fire station is less than half a mile away. Flames had spread into the roof quickly, and that collapsed, destroying the interior and the undelivered mail. Postal inspectors have taken over the investigation, and officials have contacted postal customers to make other arrangements to pick up mail.
Frankfort Fatal
(Frankfort) – State police are trying to figure out why a 34-year old Brooks woman was driving on the wrong side of Route 1-A in Frankfort yesterday. Her car collided with a vehicle a Bucksport man drove, and Teresa Sirois died in the crash. Her 3-year old son was strapped into a car seat in the back – he’s injured but will survive. The other car’s driver, 53-year old Randall Pukay of Bucksport, also suffered injuries. The crash and investigation shut down the road for more than 3-hours.
Drug Sentence
(Bangor) – A 36-year old Alna man will spend 2-years in prison for helping to sell crack cocaine and heroin. The US Attorney’s Office reports to Star 97.7 that Bradford Christopher received his sentence yesterday after pleading guilty last October. Court records showed that Christopher would drive his co-conspirators to trap houses where drugs were sold. Federal judge John Woodcock called Christopher a traitor to his community.
Bucks Harbor Prison Closing
(Machiasport) – The former Air Force installation turned into a prison will likely close down to save the state money. The Downeast Correctional Facility in the Bucks Harbor section of Machiasport is slated to close according to the Bangor Daily News. The prison has room for 150-inmates and employs more than 50-people. It has been on the chopping block before but spared each time after local business leaders rallied to support the facility. State officials say closure would save the state $5-million dollars a year.
Monmouth Fire
(Monmouth) – Several fire departments that battled yesterday’s post office fire in Winthrop were back at it overnight, battling a blaze in Monmouth. WABI-TV reports numerous fire departments responded to a building fire on the Mt. Pisgah Road at 2:30 this morning. No injuries are reported. It’s not clear what was burning.
Deer-Winter
(Local) A local deer biologist cautions against feeding deer because it causes them to invade residential areas and they’re more likely to get hit by cars. Tom Schaeffer with the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife says for those who want to feed the deer anyway, try clipping and leaving a few branches from maple, cedar or hemlock trees on your property. But Schaeffer says food isn’t a deer’s primary concern this time of year.
OUI Charges
(Penobscot) An Orland man faces OUI and other charges after he fled from police last week. A state trooper heading west on Route 15 in Penobscot came across a stopped vehicle with no lights on. When the trooper approached the car, the driver ran but was found later by a police K-9. The Ellsworth American reports 23-year-old Jamie Moore is charged with Operating Under the Influence, Operating After Suspension, and Refusing to Submit to Arrest.
