Portland Shooting
(Portland) – The Portland police officer who shot a man wielding a pellet gun that looked like a real rifle has been involved in a previous shooting incident. Sergeant Nicholas Goodman fired the fatal shot that killed 22-year old Chance Baker on Saturday outside a strip mall in Portland. Back in 2008 Goodman shot and killed a car driver who dragged him for about 300-feet. An investigation found that shooting justified. Goodman fired at Baker this weekend as Baker waved a gun around in the parking lot and threatening to shoot motorists. Friends say Baker may have been involved with drugs and alcohol.
Snowmobile Fatal
(Newport) – The heavy snowfall from last week led to a lot of snowmobiles on the trails this weekend, and two of them did not come home. Killed early Saturday morning was 36-year old Jack McKay the 3rd of Etna. His sled slammed into trees in Newport. The Warden Service reports to Star 97.7 McKay was riding just after midnight with two others who found the crash. One of the companions faces OUI charges. Friday, a woman died in Buxton when a car collided with her snowmobile as it crossed a public road.
Domestic Violence Arrest
(Frankfort) – Police have captured a Waldo County man wanted in connection with a domestic violence incident. State Police report they arrested 32-year old Daniel Campbell of Frankfort last night. Troopers had issued a call for public help in locating Campbell who has ties to North Carolina and only recently moved to Maine. He was allegedly involved in a domestic violence situation in Frankfort, and police had an outstanding warrant for domestic violence terrorizing, kidnapping, aggravated assault and obstructing report of a crime.
Boat Fire
(Rockland) – Quick work by Rockland’s fire department kept a fishing boat from going up in flames. The Marine Patrol spotted smoke coming from the 60-foot fishing boat Brizo. They tried to put out the fire with an extinguisher but it was not enough. The Pen Bay Pilot reports the fire was contained to old rubber tire parts used to keep chains from chafing against the hull. It took less than half an hour to get the fire out.
$20 On The 20th
(Ellsworth) Today is “20 on the 20th”, a campaign effort by the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce to try to boost to the local economy when winter sales are slow. Chamber executive director Gretchen Wilson says spending $20 on the 20th at a local business has a positive domino effect.
Kidnapping Arrests
(Maine) Five people are in jail including 3 Mainers after an alleged kidnap-for-hire scheme in North Carolina. A Massachusetts man allegedly hired a group to take his son away from family members in North Carolina and bring the boy back to him in Massachusetts. A witness called deputies last Wednesday to report seeing a boy being taken from a home, restrained, and forced into a van with Maine plates. The suspects and the boy were located a short time later in Virginia. Charged with felony restraint and felony breaking and entering are 59-year-old Lorraine Colpitts of Brewer, 38-year-old Michael Warman of Bangor, and 32-year-old Mickey Mitton of Bangor, along with another man from Texas. Police arrested the boy’s father the next day for orchestrating the kidnapping.
Wiscasset & MDOT Lawsuit
(Wiscasset) Several businesses in downtown Wiscasset are suing the town and the Maine Department of Transportation because they say the construction plans to ease traffic on a section of Route 1 that makes up Main Street changed after voters approved them last June. The Bangor Daily News reports Maine DOT told voters that the Federal Highway Administration would fund 80-percent, or $4-million-dollars, of the 5-million-dollar project, which then requires the project to adhere to federal historic and environmental standards. Residents later learned the Maine DOT would forgo the federal funding to use the money on other state projects, which relieves the Wiscasset project from being held to federal historic and other restrictions. Plaintiffs want a “valid” referendum vote after Maine DOT tells how much it intends the town to pay, and after the DOT demonstrates the project will comply with all applicable historic preservation standards.
Dr. Reprimanded
(Orono) A state board partially suspended a Bangor doctor’s medical license for improperly obtaining prescription drugs for his own use. The Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine alleges Dr Harry Peddie gave inconsistent explanations about his use and method of getting controlled substances, and that he failed to disclose to the Board during its investigation that his current medical practice included prescribing controlled substances. Peddie can no longer prescribe drugs for a 30-day period and pending a hearing on March 14th.
Collins-Chair
(Maine) Maine Senator Susan Collins has been selected as the chair of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus for the 115th Congress. Throughout her service in the Senate, Collins has sponsored numerous bills to address the needs of the fire service. The Congressional Fire Services Caucus was created in 1987 as a bipartisan group where Republicans and Democrats could work together to improve the readiness of local first responders.
Student Loans
(Portland) Maine Senator Angus King is among a group of lawmakers backing a proposal to eliminate a tax penalty that is currently levied on student loans forgiven for families after the death or disability of the borrower. King, an independent, says the federal government forgives some student loans in the case of death or disability, but the IRS treats the cancelled debt as income. That can result in tens of thousands of dollars in tax liability.
